Re: UHD release announcements

I haven't seen Crash in many years. It's a very stylized film, but it's also grotesque as well. Not sure it's something that's worth owning.

Re: UHD release announcements

In addition to The Hobbit, there's rumors that the LOTR films will be released in UHD this December:
https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/082520-1400
And finally, we’re seeing more indications from European disc retailers that Warner plans to bring The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical and Extended Editions) to 4K Ultra HD in December (12/9 is the date we’ve seen most often listed in France and Germany). This does seem to indicate that the studio has made the decision to split the two trilogies up and have Weta focus on finishing the 4K remastering of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy first in order to release it on the format in time for the holidays.

You're probably joking, but UHD Blu-ray has a maximum framerate of 60fps. Also, The Hobbit was shot at 48fps, which isn't supported either.

Re: UHD release announcements

Mostly joking, but the upcoming TV releases have 120 capability. Of course we’ll need a player that does that. And a receiver...

Re: UHD release announcements

I’m really curious about the framerate. These were 48fps, and that’s not part of the Ultra HD Blu-ray spec.

Why shoot at a frame rate incompatible with home video formats?

Between the 3D and high frame rate, I'm sure the idea was to give theater-goers an experience they couldn't replicate at home. Not that anyone back then would've known what the specs for Ultra HD Blu-ray would be years down the road. I believe 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 frames per second are supported, but it does seem like at least some studios are skittish about using 25 or 50fps since hardware support is unreliable in the U.S. (INXS' Live Baby Live seems to have been produced in 25fps, but it was rejiggered to 60fps for UHD BD, even though it didn't get a domestic UHD release.)

Whatever the reason Peter Jackson had for the funky frame rate it looked like shit. Good riddance.

Re: UHD release announcements

That Zavvi exclusive has a whole lotta junk there. And I have never seen a good transfer of this movie, so I guess we’ll see what happens with this one.

Re: UHD release announcements

Yeah I watched it on Epix last year and the HD transfer was not great. It looked old and dated. I'm perfectly content with my BD.

It's got the entire two disc Quartet release of the soundtrack that's now OoP (though I think it may be repackaged and rereleased from them again soon)

One of Goldsmith's best scores too.

Looks like Shout is releasing They Live on 4K UHD. Hope they got the other Carpenter classics as well.

The reason is pretty simple and not funky. He wanted HFR and 48 FPS is twice the normal theatrical 24 FPS.

Interesting. It’s not my favorite Carpenter film, but I may support the release in hopes that Shout/Scream release more titles on 4K.

And what was the one title of those that I imported on Ultra HD Blu-ray...? You guessed it. They Live.

I do hope this bodes well, although since they lost Escape from New York, we'll have to import that or wait for another label to pick it up.

I recently procured the Blu Ray so of course this is announced for US release.
