I feel like the same 1-2 Graphic Designers are being used for every Best Buy Steelbook release nowadays.

I wonder if they are high school interns?

Re: UHD release announcements

A whole bunch of Paramount titles -- Collateral, War of the Worlds (1953), Coming to America, and Beverly Hills Cop -- are listed on dvd-store.it as being coming to Ultra HD Blu-ray courtesy of Universal. They also just posted a listing for John Carpenter's The Thing.

So Beverly Hills Cop will be released on 4K disc? Or just not in the US? Hmm...

It's unclear (on both fronts). dvd-store.it has gotten early listings from Universal right before (Uni, AFAIK, still distributes Paramount's titles on home video overseas), such as with Psycho a couple months back. And they're listing a steelbook release for The Thing, and steelbooks are something that retailer is particularly known for. So my thought process is if that sounds legit, and that's listed alongside a whole bunch of other Universal-distributed releases, that adds credence to the whole shootin' match. But at the same time, there's no release date, no EAN code... I'm taking these listings with a grain of salt, but it is very promising.

Kind of odd timing on War of the Worlds with the Criterion release dropping soon. Granted that’s a Blu-ray and not a 4K. I’d maybe consider Coming to America and The Thing. I have Scream Factory’s release of The Thing though so it would depend how much of an upgrade it is.

I'd love it if the BHC UHD is true.

It was a similar situation with The Elephant Man too.

That’s true. Wasn’t that only released overseas though?

In markets where Studiocanal holds the rights, yeah. And reportedly Paramount isn’t licensing UHD rights to labels like Criterion and Shout Factory, so if there were to be a UHD release of The Elephant Man on these shores, it’d have to come from Paramount directly.

I’m not sure about this wave of listings. Universal distributes Paramount’s home video catalog outside of North America, but I don’t know if these are getting a worldwide release and Paramount will be issuing them in the U.S., or if they’ll only be hitting countries where Universal is distributing. Or if none of this will pan out and these are just faulty listings.

I’m hopeful, though!

Re: UHD release announcements

Best Buy lists two different editions of the complete Game of Thrones -- one in a bunch of steelbooks, the other in traditional packaging. Considering the playback issues I had with my S8 UHD steelbook, I'll be avoiding that this time around.

Best Buy used to reliably put all HBO box sets on sale for 50% off around Christmas, would be nice if that happens again this year.

I imagine the price on that Weathering With You set will be exorbitant.

Re: UHD release announcements

At least there are plenty of options to import, and the quality shouldn't be any different (at least with Anime Ltd. in the UK):

Who is handling the disc authoring and compression/encoding of the discs?
We’re working with our friends at GKIDS on authoring for the 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD, so they’re handling that element of the project.

Is the same 4K master being used for this release as that used for the Japanese release?
Needless to say, all of the materials for this release – including those for the UHD Blu-ray – are being provided by the Japanese licensor, but I don’t have any specific information beyond that at this time.
I'm very interested, but I don't see myself ponying up $60+ for the collector's edition of a movie I haven't actually watched, so hopefully it shakes out to a whole lot less at retail. It's not uncommon to see European labels issue movies in lavish UHD collector's editions and then follow with a more standard, less expensive release months down the road. Maybe that's what'll happen here too.
