Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

thought since there was a thread created at bluray.com we could get some discussion going on the eventual/probable 3D release later this Fall.

will you buy it if it had significantly more extras even if you're not 3D capable but included on a separate Bluray? or buy it if it were 4K Ultra HD?

It would have to have some spectacular extras. I'm not interested in movies converted to 3D.

yes, UHD (with the IMAX shot scene) with Dolby Atmos, more extras: commentary track, 3D bonus disc.

So does everyone at this forum have a 3D HDTV?

I'm just curious why most here seem to lose their minds when a movie released on BD doesn't have a 3D disc included? I know complaints have been directed at Disney specifically.

I know Star Wars could have been seen in 3D when it was in theaters, but did the 3D really improve the experience of watching it?

E Unit 04-06-16 10:22 PM

re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

Yeah, we're pissed Disney dropped 3D the way they did, yet still continue to release nearly everything in 3D. That and the fact that Disney still releases 3D overseas.

In the case of this movie, the 3D was barely worth watching. You didn't get any added value by seeing it in 3D. I'll still buy only to support the format, but I'll only watch it maybe once or twice. Kind of banking on the fact that the 3D release will include some additional extras we didn't get with the recent one.

Giles 04-06-16 10:25 PM

re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

^ interestingly the best 3D scene was the still shot of the Star Destroyer sticking it's nose out towards us the viewer - did it add "value"? probably not, but it was a cool shot.

DJariya 04-06-16 10:27 PM

re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

There was a 1 hour Making of documentary in addition to the other snippets of material.

What else could they possibly add? Only thing I could think of would be a director/cast commentary.

But then again, how many here actually sit and listen to commentaries now? I know they're nice to have to feel like you have the most complete version of the product, but I did a thread a few years ago asking if you guys still listen to audio commentaries and most answered no. Main reason= No time.

You're right, it was the coolest shot, especially in IMAX. I just wish there was a lot more than just that one we could be talking about when it came to the 3D.

I do, for a lot of movies. I know i'm in the minority, but give me a good commentary, and I'll make time to watch it. Hey, we all buy movies with the intention of seeing it more than once. I usually make one of those viewings one where I can hear a good commentary.

I want to see a featurette on how a special effects shot (escape off of Jakku) is rendered and captured on 15/70 IMAX film stock.

I didn't answer the poll as I'm not buying "another" edition- I'm either buying the 3D edition or none at all.

I know Star Wars could have been seen in 3D when it was in theaters, but did the 3D really improve the experience of watching it?
It's not a question of "improving the experience", it's that the movie was shown in 3D in theaters so that's how I want to see it at home. It was in color so I want to see it in color also. I hate how 3D has been treated as an "add-on" with separate showings and increased charges for it. In the 50s and 80s, 3D movies were either shown in 3D or they weren't shown at all (only exceptions being drive-ins which weren't capable of showing 3D, and a few titles in the 50s were shown in 2D due to problems projecting 3D back then as it required 2 projectors run perfectly in sync.)

I don't know the reason for delaying the 3D disc of this movie, but it sounds like Disney IS releasing Zootopia on disc in 3D later- I already have it pre-ordered from Target to show my support for it. Since I'm finally employed again, I'm planning on buying EVERY 3D Blu-Ray release to show my support for it, at least until it has enough market support from the general public to not be considered a "niche" market and every movie produced in 3D is guaranteed to get a 3D disc release.

As much as I love a 3D movie at home, there's no way that I would ever even CONTEMPLATE buying every 3D release that comes out in Region A. There are two main reasons for this:

1. Expense--There is no real reason except for corporate greed that causes the list prices for 3D Blu-rays to be so high. Generally speaking, of the major studios, only Universal and Lionsgate have decent prices for their 3D discs...and that's mainly because they, for most releases, have combo 2D/3D releases that will play in anyone's setup for no extra money. I appreciate that, so I support their releases whenever possible. As far as the other studios go, I buy my 3D discs used and cheap.

2. Bloat--Alan, even though my spending this year is off the charts, I still don't have either room to store nor time to watch every single 3D disc that comes out. And even if I did, would I really find myself revisiting that Smurf movie or The Green Lantern multiple times? Nah...I wouldn't.

So, for now, the only new 3D movies that I buy come from studios who aren't gouging us for the privilege, and everything else is bought used for cheap.

Keep up the good fight, though, Don Quixote. We'll see if your stand will work for the common good.

So you'll buy a movie you don't like and would never watch ONLY because it's in 3D. Part of the mentality behind your hoarding issue.

And it will always be a niche market.

I don't know what the sudden interest on 3D is. Not just here, but facebook and anywhere the Force Awakens dvd is mentioned. Had no idea that so many 3D tvs were sold!

I'll buy whatever they put out (that I can watch) for this movie. Absolutely loved it.

BSTNFAN 04-07-16 10:03 AM

re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

I am not buying the initial release solely because I am waiting for the 3D. If the 3D never arrives, I will wait for UHD. If that never arrives, I will just DVR it from Starz or whichever channel Disney is contracted to these days. Has nothing to do with whatever 5 minute snippet is missing from the extras.

Shooba 04-07-16 11:01 AM

re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Blu-ray 3D) --> 11/15/16

I'd buy another release if the extras looked good. I don't have a 3D TV so don't care about that aspect.

I rarely watch extras on movies anymore, but Star Wars is one of the exceptions.

I hope that Lucasfilm continues to produce quality special features, now that they are owned by Disney.

The original prequel DVDs are great examples of compelling and interesting special features. Those documentaries are entertaining in their own right, and make one appreciate the effort and artistry that went into the making of those movies, regardless of how one feels about the finished product.

If there ever get to be so many 3D discs released that I don't have room to store all of them, that will be a GOOD thing. Again, I'm doing this more to keep "voting" for 3D existing at all than to have the movies- with the bad press 3D gets, studio complaints of low sales and Disney not releasing some titles at all, I feel I should do whatever I can to help the situation. I've been a fan of 3D for decades and this is the BEST-quality home 3D that has ever existed- I don't want to see it become a failed technology due to low sales or public interest. I haven't watched Green Lantern yet but The Smurfs was one of the first 3D movies I watched at home. Yes, it was kinda dumb but one of those movies you have to just appreciate for what it is. No, I likely wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't in 3D.

I see. Since I disagree with your opinion, I must be a troll. Surely you must be smart enough to think that maybe people will disagree with you, right? Surely you cant be that deluded that you think everyone will agree with you all the time, can you? And when did I ever say I "hate 3D"? I simply think that the current fad that is "3d" is ineffective and useless. In it's current incarnation it is a waste of money on not only an overpriced theater ticket, but also on an overpriced home video release.
Don't you have some threads to repost or discs to convert or something?

Yeah, and I asked the question of why another thread because I just started the other one. But Oldboy started it because there has been an announcement that there will be a 3D release. Not just because he loves 3D. I personally think there should be one thread for the entire movie which includes 3D, 4k, but whatever. It's wasted money to you, but to a lot of us, it's not.

You do understand, I hope, that the poll question asked was a yes/no question, right? So negative responses are a viable answer to the question asked and should be expected. In fact "What are you, high?" was aprovided response. Now the OP gets pissy when somebody expresses dissent.

I wasn't a home 3D fan until I got a projector that does 3D several months ago. Now I am a huge fan and hope 3D sticks around.

I particularly enjoy the 3D releases of movies 1985 or before. Those have much better 3D than many new releases.

Same here. I had almost zero interest until we set up our projector. Even though we still don't use the 3D mode all that often, it's a pretty cool feature to use now and then.

The 2D bluray that just came out looks fantastic. As something of a completist, I'd be tempted to buy the 3D version, particularly if it has unique extra features, but in all honesty I'm more likely to watch the 2D version at home. 3D on the TV just isn't as impressive or immersive as in the theater. Plus I can't twiddle with my phone with those glasses on. I think I can wait until the inevitable UHD version that will be out by the time I get around to shifting my home theater to UHD (not for a couple more years at the earliest).

That's because movies that were released in 3D then were all shot and designed for 3D. Most modern movies are converted as an afterthought to get in on that 3D upcharge.

Well, sure. But only after I answered the question that was asked in the OP, with one of the answers that the OP himself chose to provide. Op got all pissy because he didn't like that my answer didn't agree with his.
As to the question of whether this is a "perfectly legitimate thread", I would say that it may be a legitimate thread, in that it exists and has replies, but it is a wholly unnecessary one. There has already been plenty of talk about a possible 3d release for this title in several of the countless other threads devoted to this film. But then OPs MO is to create unnecessary threads.

If you think it's unnecessary, ignore it. If it doesn't go away, that's because other people are enjoying it, which means it isn't unnecessary.

It ain't rocket surgery.
