Pan's Labyrinth

OK, quick and simple: what's the deal with this movie on BD? Apparently the U.S. release was DNRed to hell, and the U.K. release was a limited edition steelbook. What's the best bet now that all is said and done? I can just keep my SE DVD for the old extras, does the regular U.K. release still have the good transfer? Is there a Region A version which has the non-DNR transfer?

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

"DNRed To Hell" is extremely hyperbolic. I thought it looked fine/OK when I saw it years back (on HD DVD). While the UK disc does appear to be superior, I didn't feel the US looked in any way unnaturally smooth or plastic in motion. If you didn't have another source to compare to, you most likely wouldn't have a problem with it. And it's still better than a DVD.

In any case, it's not the kind of image anyone would think twice about if they saw it projected in an actual theater.

I ended up getting a Bd copy of it, and then picked up the UK steel when I went region free. But it was more to get the steelbook which has some great, lesser seen Struzen art. The (slightly) better transfer is just a bonus.

I would like to know, also. I've had this forever but it's time to upgrade.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

Can't believe the film is 10 years old already. Time for a 10th anniversary release!

I just have the regular blu release. Haven't seen it in awhile, but remember it looking just fine. The review seems to agree as well.

Not at all. By today's standards, it doesn't look as good as today's releases, but even now, it looks good. Just spend the $12 and get the standard release. I think this is Del Toro's best next to Devil's Backbone (And Blade II!).

It's better than both of those in my opinion. Actually, I think it is his best film.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

This one can be had for about $15 shipped US:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Labyrinth-Sp...%27s+labyrinth

The original UK disc was reviewed as having less or no DNR but it didn't have a lossless track. This edition does. I recently picked this one up but have yet to view it. I still have the US disc so I may do some comparisons. I'm not sure if this UK disc is region free but I believe the last one was so this kay be as well.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

At first I thought the above cover was one of those "comps" that people like to do, -a "wish-list" item, so to speak, -since Criterion announces its titles at mid-moth. But I looked it up and DelToro says that's for real. That's cool, -I've liked their previous editions of his work and GDT is generous with his "extras", if he's allowed to be.

Of course, I finally got around to buying the BD this year, in spite of some remarks about the PQ. Of course, I was also surprised to find it turning up in a 7.99 dump bin at Walmart.

Still, count me in...

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

So psyched that Criterion got Becky Cloonan to do the artwork for that release.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labrynth (regular version) was one of the first Blu-rays I ever bought. It might be time for an upgrade.

I still need to pick up Criterion's The Devil's Backbone. Didn't care much for Cronos.
