Just curious if the trend has started where collectors have already began selling their Blu-ray collection in anticipation of UHD-Blu-ray?

I seem to remember several guys unloading their DVDs just before BD trying to get as much money as they could before prices hit rock-bottom.

I upgraded a ton from DVD to BD because the difference was so appreciable. I'll probably just buy new stuff and absolute favorites on UHD but stick with BD for the rest.

I remember that. They certainly maximized their value but a crapload of titles still haven't hit BR all these years later. I may upgrade a few titles, new ones, once I have the equipment I'll go UHD, but until then I continue to watch many DVD's. No reason to start dumping BR.

I don't think there's a single person unloading any of their blu's in anticipation of the upcoming format. And even when the hardware and software come out, it probably won't be until 2017 before they start dropping to blu prices of today.

So no, I'm not. But...I am holding off buying the "remastered in 4K" titles like the Sony ones. Those are part of the first wave of UHD releases, and I have those already from the first blu ray release. I'm good until then.

I was one of those who started selling off my laser discs collection before dvd came out. As well as my dvd collection before blu-ray came out.

But not this time. Don't have the equipment to run UHD-Blu-ray. Although just this morning my Panasonic Plasma TC-P50S30 Tv of 4.5 years finally gives me the 7 red blinking lights of death. Not sure what I will buy next.

Most of my blurays will probably only fetch a dollar or less on the second handed market. No point in unloading them. (ie. A lot of dump bin stuff).

But with that being said, I'm holding off on some future bluray purchases to see how the 4K market emerges. My guess is some 4K titles will probably be combo packs of 4K + generic bluray + digital code.

For example, I'll be holding off on purchasing the Star Wars VII movie until I see it in 4K resolution.

This UHD-BD stuff hasn't even been much of a blip on my radar. It's tech is interesting but it doesn't seem like a format that has a lot of backing for me to care for in comparison to what BD delivered.

I do wonder if BD is the final format before everything really goes to streaming. If even possible of a factor.

I have no intention of divesting anything from my Blu-ray collection at this point. UHD will almost certainly only see a fraction of movies that hit Blu-ray.

The rise of streaming quality is going to drastically affect how videophiles operate going forward. I foresee Blu-ray being the optimal format of choice for many, many disparate movies for decades. Blu-ray will also likely be the final, physical format release for hundreds of catalog movies.

The cost of production for UHDs will preclude most of the niche distributors supporting the Blu-ray market today. UHD will be a Hollywood studio-only product for several years.

Going back further in time, wonder how many people ditched their audio cds for vinyl records.

(Or somebody ditching their blurays, for dvds).

Nope. I still a ton of DVDs that I haven't ditched for BD.

if all the extras from "The Kingsmen" are ported over to the UHD ... AND it has it's Dolby Atmos mix - sure why not?

While i'm sure i'll get a 4K TV in the next year or two, I don't know if i'll start upgrading discs any time in the near future. At this point I have a PS3, XBox One, and i'll probably buy a PS4 in the same time frame and don't have much interest in buying a stand alone player for it. I'm already cutting back on regular Blu-ray's as it is. I'm quickly being more ok with just streaming stuff.

nope, (and I know its way too early in the stages of UHD-BD) but if we're talking "right now", not a single UHD-BD title interests me while there's still a ton of BDs that I'm interested in. So I'd definitely sell off those lame-ass Sony announced UHD-BD titles (if they were in my possession) for BDs I would be more interested in.

When physical media takes its final gasp of air and goes down for the count, I assume my collection will be around 15% dvd, 70% Blu ray, 15% UHD-BD. With the UHD-BD % moving up, but at a snails pace.

I can see that happening. I don't stream at all yet but I'm still contributing to the death of physical media by almost never buying it. I rent at Family Video, and truthfully even though I enjoy the disc, streaming will be much more convenient when I get around to it.

I won't be selling off any BDs but having UHD BD around the corner does affect my purchasing decisions for some movies. For example I held off buying the Goodfellas 4K remaster because I figured that would be one of the early UHD BD titles. Not saying I would buy the UHD BD day 1, but just don't want to buy a movie, only to have it be trumped by a better version a year or two later. Also any recent non-3D title on BD, or 4k remasters, I'm prone to pass for the same reason (unless it's super cheap).

Back in the late 1990's, I was tempted to purchase some huge laserdisc collections which were being unloaded by my local offline friends at the time. (ie. They were moving on to dvd).

But unfortunately one of the first dvds I purchased turned out to be defective. My first copy of Terminator 2 was defective, where it froze within the first 20 minutes into the movie. This very much immediately changed my mind about optical discs, literally overnight and very abruptly.

Since I didn't know of any easy ways of checking laserdiscs (and also then-new dvds) for random bad sectors due to manufacturing defects and/or wear and tear, in the end I didn't bother buying my friends' laserdisc collections. Also this abruptly ended any possible "dvd hobby" I could have had in those days. (This was in the days before the dvd's CSS encryption drm system was cracked).

Prior to this time, I had assumed optical discs were error free. Up to that time, none of my audio cds and laserdiscs had any grave errors which were uncorrectable. After I had encountered that first defective T2 dvd, I immediately checked my entire audio cd collection on the computer, to see whether any of my discs had any bad sectors.

I only started buying a lot dvds and blurays in 2011, when I figured out how to check dvd and bluray discs on the computer for random bad sectors due to manufacturing defects. (By then, computer bluray drives were below $100 a pop).
