On my setup there is not really that much of a difference in picture quality between DVD and BD (in most cases). I have zero interest in delving into the lame attempt at a further upgrade at any time in the foreseeable future.

153 DVDs/BDs later, I'm still not interested in upgrading to (or buying new) UHD videos, although the BDs have increased to 11.9% of my collection.

I've started to upgrade some of my HD DVD titles. I have Apollo13 and Serenity 4K on order but no BR yet. Due to the configuration of my room, I can't upgrade to Atmos and the picture quality is too close in most cases to upgrade.

Won't this only be the second Black Friday UHD discs are even around? The only one I remember from last year was BvS for $10 on Amazon, so who knows what the heck they are going to offer this year. I guess I'm still surprised I see so many DVDs during BF.

I just got a UHD-BD player (already had a Vizio 4K set from a year ago) so I'm on board. I know I got to have Blade Runner 2049 in UHD so why start prepping early.

Not sure. I’ve never really had attention to the format.

Yeah. The format's a little over a year and a half old.

With BD, and HD-DVD, the first Black Friday was a bust. The second year was where we saw prices come down. I'm hoping for a 9.99-12.99 price point for the major studio stuff.

I can’t afford to spend $25-30 a pop for every major new UHD release that I want. So I have to be a little selective.

Last one I bought was Wonder Woman. Not sure what’s next in the future.

Re: Anyone Ditching Their BDs For UHD-BD Yet?

I have a nice, almost 3 year old, 60" Samsung 8* series non-HDR 4K set (with 3D!) that's not getting replaced any time soon. My 50" Panny plasma is over 10 years old and there's no signs of it going any time soon either, and I still have not purchased a UHD player yet.

But, now that I own the Guardians of The Galaxy UHD (BB exclusive with 3D BD)and it looks like Disney is on board, I'm now going to order the UHD/BD combos going forward for new releases if available. I just placed a pre-order for Valerian in that format, but I guess I would have gone BD/3D BD if it had been available for that one (3D was good but not good enough to get me to import).

That said, I'm definitely not buying a lot of new releases anyway these days, at least on release day. I'm going to get the Baby Driver UHD at some point when the price drops.

I've been a massive film collector (from VHS to Blu-ray) but as I get older, I realize I should be simplifying my life and not have so much stuff. I still buy films I like in BD but I'm quite certain this will be the last physical format I'll be supporting.

Fortunately there are so few I really need to own, I do pick them up release week even though they seem to drop pretty quickly these days. I have 18 so far with Apollo 13 and Serenity on their way. It doesn't appear much else is coming before Christmas that I want.

I did just upgrade a BR. I had a copy of Starship Troopers that was defective. An early pressing of the BR had a 10 second scene repeated and I never got around to sending it in and getting a replacement. BB had the UHD 20th Anniversary on sale so I picked that up and donated mine to the library.

So many HD DVD's I picked up for cheap when the format went under but now as I try to clean off the shelves many of them are going. I didn't mind owning them for the few bucks they cost but most have sat there collecting dust. I'm no longer willing to devote space to dust collectors. I've upgraded several to UHD or BR, will upgrade more as they come available and just toss out the rest at some point. Just threw out Viva Las Vegas which I watched once and 2 Harry Potters that have never been watched.

I hope you meant you threw out HD-DVDs that no longer play- I went through several copies of Viva Las Vegas before getting one that would play at all. I bought nearly every US title when they were clearing them out, but after having so many end up rotting (they either won't play at all, or freeze up) I've given up on the format.

Don't know if they play or not. I just made myself a promise that every time I bought a new title I would get rid of at least a couple old ones. The HD DVD's that have sat there for a decade without being watched can be thrown out. I no longer get enjoyment from having a "collection". If I don't watch it, I don't need to own it. Those Mummy movies were fun. I enjoyed seeing them and wanted them upon release. But now I haven't watched them in over 10 years so I have a hard time justifying $17 on a movie I don't watch. If I bought them in 4K I would watch once then forget them.

I'm in the same boat with HDDVD. I have about 300 titles, which is almost every title they produced in North America. When the format went belly-up I bought in for what worked-out to be roughly $1.50 a title.

A good portion of the titles are mediocre at best but I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Some of the Warner titles I've re-bought in Blu just in case the HDDVD craps-out on me at some point but I've come to realization that movie collecting and dust collecting come hand-in-hand.

I refuse to have a collection stored on a perfectly efficient, non-descript hard drive. The artwork jackets, packaging and liner booklets are what make it interesting.

I'm not into that either. And I shouldn't say I'm not into having a collection. I still like having a decent collection, I'm just not into "collecting" any more. I still buy war genre and Marvel superhero movies. Other than that, few and far between. If I have some RZ$ and a good sale comes along I'll add a title. I love 4K discs and insist I can see a difference between them and BR. I just don't think there is enough difference to justify upgrading a perfectly good BR. I'm not going to rush to replace an HD but I will when the right 4K comes along.

Re: Anyone Ditching Their BDs For UHD-BD Yet?

Orangerunner and JimRochester, I agree with you both kinda doing the same thing. I have been finding some of my HD-DVD discs have ended up rotten. I probably have about 14 left and hope they are still usable for a few more years. Have replaced some on BR, if I know I will watch them on somewhat regular basis.

I have recently bought a 4k TV, which I enjoy but have not jumped into the UHD format. I at least will wait for my Blu-player to go and until the prices go down, will not think of buying any combo's.

JimRochester 10-14-17 02:11 PM

Re: Anyone Ditching Their BDs For UHD-BD Yet?

Most UHD's have been $5 more than the BR counterpart on release week. For $5 I don't mind owning the better disc. I'm just more interested in freshening up the titles versus just adding more titles to the shelves. So I've thrown out hundreds of DVD-r's, and about 20+ HD DVD's. I've donated several dozen BR and DVD to the library while at the same time adding maybe 25 - 30 titles, mostly UHD.

JimRochester 10-15-17 03:59 PM

Re: Anyone Ditching Their BDs For UHD-BD Yet?

An added note. Family Video which is a few miles from my house has UHD discs for rent for the same price as BR. So the new releases I am not buying I can rent in 4K. Saw a few recently like that. Unfortunately they only have a few of each title so I haven't been able to take advantage of the cheap selling price when they pare down inventory. I would pay $7.99 all day long for a few UHD discs.

Re: Anyone Ditching Their BDs For UHD-BD Yet?

I haven't really followed the UHD-BD format (I saw the selection at BestBuy today and 90% were recent movies and very few classic catalog titles).

My question is will we ever see Jaws, Stat Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather, etc ever released in this format? I think if they started to release their classic back catalogs then I think I would take the dip, but in this day and age I don't know if there is a market for it?

You mean classics like Close Encounters, E.T., Blade Runner, or Bridge on the River Kwai? I think it's very possible that studios will take chances on these movies

Star Wars Ep II and III were shot in 1080p, so releasing them on UHD-BD would be kind of pointless. Granted, a lot of folks don't like the prequels, but it might prevent the whole saga from getting a "UHD" release.

Avatar was also 1080p, so you wouldn't get any more resolution out of it on UHD-BD, either.

I just watched Bladerunner this past weekend. I agree with most of the reviews of it. Many of the interior shots had a lot of grain with obvious sharpening applied to them but the exterior shots were truly something to behold.

You guys have me worried about my HD-dvd collection because I have a shelf of them I haven't touched in like 5 years.

And of course you'd lose 3D, this movie's only attribute.

With these titles there is a catch-22. While many people may wait for these classics to dip their toe in the water, since lovers of these movies will already own them on BR, the market for upgrade will be limited. I'd rather see some titles that have yet to get a hi-def release see some love. True Lies anyone?

Over 90% of the movies available in Ultra HD were upconverted from 2k Digital Intermediates. The difference in resolution between 1080p and UHD is pretty insignificant, visually. The important thing is that these movies are re-graded into High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut. No reason the same couldn't be done for all the Star Wars movies or Avatar.
