Criterion Fisher King - Possible Issue
Hi Everyone,
I purchased Criterion's The Fisher King on Blu-ray. I also own the Image Blu-ray.
There is a shot at 1:14:06 that has black on the right edge of the frame from top to bottom. This appears to have been captured in camera on the negative.
On the Image Blu-ray you can see that the shot has been zoomed in, thus cropping out the black.
See here for comparison:

It is my belief that Criterion failed to replicate this correction for this shot on their Blu-ray release.
I'd like to ask anyone that cares, to contact Criterion via their website or Facebook page and ask them to address this issue and hopefully issue a corrected disc.

I am told that Criterion is very good about responding to things such as this.
But ultimately, Criterion will be more responsive if they hear from those who care about this possible issue.
Thanks,

Criterion has a habit of mucking up Terry Gilliam releases with errors.... Don't have the disc yet to check for myself.

Re: Criterion Fisher King - Possible Issue
Doesn't Criterion kind of have a policy of keeping "in camera" issues in place? Zooming in to remove the problem area (like the Image BD) is something that affects the framing of the shot. Is the zooming fix something Gilliam approved for Image and/or the original theatrical run?
I mean... you're probably right that it's something to fix, but... it could be that they specifically intended to keep the full image in place instead of using a digital zoom...
Is there any info on what's "officially" the right option here?

Entirely off subject, but what I find amusing about that screen shot is that (except for a few boxes that we only see the spines of) every videocassette in that "store" is an RCA/Columbia (as Sony was known back then) release.

This is going to be one of those widely debated issues until Criterion responds. My guess is that it was done intentionally.

I'm okay with it.
I'd rather that shot stay with the dark side than have the entire image zoomed in.
I don't think it's a CC error.

You guys should go read the thread over at you know where. They're frothing at the mouth about it.

Stuff like that routinely shows (or maybe showed, now that theaters have switch to that digital crap) up on 35mm prints- I'd prefer they just keep it as it is. If anyone involved thought it was a problem, they would've fixed it beforehand.

Things like this sometimes slips through Criterion's quality control. Most recently their Eraserhead version was missing a few frames and they quickly recalled it.
