A couple weeks ago, I tried playing my BBC Galapagos Blu Ray on my PS3, and the disc wouldn't even read. The system is completely updated too, in case anyone was wondering. Does the PS3 have trouble playing some Blu Rays? The reason I was using my PS3, was a few months back, a slight accident happened to my Blu Ray Player.

Never had an issue with my PS3. It has played everything I have thrown at it.

That being said, every now and then, it won't play a disc but I just reboot the PS3 and then it plays fine.

Is it a region A? If it's region free, from the UK, it might not play on the PS3 since it won't handle 50hz conversion.

So are movies still encoded at 24p on UK discs but UK TV is done at 50 HZ because of the 25 FPS issue? Damn the UK for having PAL, lol. Why wouldn't the PS3 be able to handle 50 HZ? Is that a hardware or software issue? My region-free BD player seems to handle PAL DVDs and the one UK BD I have. Actually, come to think of it, my BD player runs PAL at 60p, so I'm assuming it converts it somehow. My region-free DVD player that I spent $30 on can do it to, odd that the PS3 wouldn't be able to.

Does the PS3 have region codes? How exactly does it work? I assume you have to mod it to get it to play other region discs?

So that means it would have trouble playing something like the Universal Monster set from the UK?

Region encoding and 25fps are two different things, although they do coincide because European discs encoded in 25fps just happen to be region B.

I have found that many Sony players do not play Region-free 25fps, however most Samsung and LG players do. Why? I'm not sure as I think Samsung and LG make their machines with a standard chip that allows both 24fps and 25fps whereas Sony and other companies may not.

PAL and NTSC supposedly do not exist in high-def world but the 25fps factor is still alive and well.

Not really a hardware or "chip" issue, more a matter of the firmware. Sony is notorious for enforcing copyright. So naturally they enforce region coding. The PAL/NTSC issue is also relevant based on the location where a specific model is sold. Most Sony players are also very picky about the brand/type of burned media that they support.

Try going into the settings and turning off the network features.

I haven't had any issues playing Blu-ray discs, but I have had a lot of problems playing some DVDs. And these would be studio released discs not anything burned.

My set plays fine on my PS3, skinny edition.

Being the BBC version, could it be a Region Free Disc then?

As Solid Snake wrote, it should be fine. The trouble normally occurs when trying to watch TV material, since it is made for 50hz.

Film material at 24fps will be fine, as long as it's region free.

If you bought it in the US, it should be fine whether it's region free or not. If it was purchased from the UK, that's likely the problem.

I had a problem playing Fasy & Furious 4. Finally got it to work by turning off the internet connection, but that's the only one I've ever had an issue with.

I seem to remember Starship Troopers had a similar problem.

I seem to remember this had an issue where it wouldn't load on my Sony S360 player unless you plugged a USB stick in the port.

I've come across a couple of Blu-rays that don't seem to play too well with the PS3.
