DC Animated Universe Films

Re: DC Animated Universe Films
I agree, -I just got bored silly during Part two and gave up. I was surprised how "available" it has become. The same week I got Part Two from the library, both parts turned up on HBO Max. Then as I was roaming the cable last Saturday, both parts turned up on one of the basic cable channels.

I have a pretty complete DCAU Steelbook collection but am thinking long & hard before buying Injustice 4K Steelbook for $34.99.

Personally as a huge Superman fan, I greatly disliked Injustice. You know a DC movie has gone wrong when Harley Quinn is the most likable character. Easily my least favorite animated DC movie since they started this line back in 2007.

Apparently this film was re-released this past week in 4K. Anyone picked it up?

I didn’t but am watching on HBO Max. It’s ok, but nothing I need to own anymore. There have been better DC animated imo.

Is The Batman animated show any good? I’ve only seen a handful of episodes.

I always heard that it was good but had very different takes on some of the Batman characters, like the Joker, who almost looked like a Jokerized Beast. Never watched more than a handful of episodes as it irked me that the animation looked to much like the Jackie Chan animated show that was ran a few years before The Batman and the fact that this show's existence prevented the team from Justice League Unlimited the use of any Bat-related character with the exception of Batman and Batman Beyond. That's why we didn't see Batman ally or villain show up during JLU's tenure, with the exception of Nightwing's very hidden cameo in one episode.

The last two seasons are a big improvement as they expand the cast of characters and Batman starts teaming up with other heroes.
The best thing from the series is actually the movie which came out after it ended - Batman Vs. Dracula. Standalone movie but hopefully should be included on the upcoming set. It's worth a watch even if you don't like the show.

DVD Talk's review of Catwoman: Hunted is up. If I were the type of person to refer to a movie as a "romp" (which, upon further research, I apparently am), this would be a perfect excuse to do it. It's not deep or densely plotted; just an excuse for some super-stylish, action-packed, anime-inspired fun. I had a great time with it, and hopefully anyone reading this will too.

^ wow. my take was totally different. i hated this more than any other DC animated. it was not fun, funny or the least bit whimsical. i could barely get through it it was so boring and uninspired. Catwoman and Batwoman are gay or at least Catwoman goes both ways, it was just ludicrous. this is not a character to hold her own movie.

Every incarnation of Batwoman since the character was reintroduced more than 15 years ago has been unambiguously gay (comics, TV show, this movie), Catwoman's bisexuality has been established in the comics for around 7 years now, and Catwoman also doesn't actually do anything with Kate. Seduction is part of her arsenal.

That's a good call on the score, which does remind me of the music from various Lupin the Third films. Those films inform a lot of the vibe in Catwoman: Hunted, in fact.
Stephanie Beatriz does a terrible job voicing Batwoman. Outside of Elizabeth Gillies, I wasn't that impressed by the voice actors, more known for their screen roles than actual voice work.

Stephanie Beatriz is most certainly known for her voice work in Bojack Horseman. She was fabulous in thst show. And of course she is the lead in Encanto.

This is one I look forward to watching because I liked what I saw from the trailer.
i just watched the Batman TMNT one last night and didn’t care for it very much.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films
"Fun" is the watchword. The story doesn't really mean anything, it's not a movie where characters stand around and talk about their feelings, it doesn't get caught up in backstory, yadda yadda. But it feels like this is almost exactly the movie they set out to make, and I feel like it succeeds on its own terms.
Some of the action early on felt very familiar (Catwoman in the vault with the emerald; nearly every beat in the car chase), but it's executed well-enough that the familiarity wasn't a bad thing. There's some clunky dialogue throughout for sure.
The acting feels very...errr, acted, and Jonathan Banks and Keith David sound so much like themselves that it's kind of hard to get lost in their characters. Part of me thinks that artifice is intentional, maybe to further the "this is an anime dub" feel rather than being performed like a traditional DC animated movie. I definitely think Beatriz' Batwoman is as-designed (as if she's puffing out her chest to show how strong and commanding she is, but it's a labored effort that fades when she lets her guard down), which isn't to say that works as well as I'd like.
But it's a super-stylish movie that doesn't aim for too much more than a good time, and that's exactly what it delivers. Not an all-time classic or anything but well-worth checking out. And it's not as vicious as the TMNT crossover, where pretty much all I remember is how surreally violent it was.

The new animated adaptation of Injustice seems to be near-universally-disliked, but I'm the outlier giving it a positive review anyway. My feelings won't be hurt if you tell me how off-base I am.
Overall, I give it a 5/10

That's always an issue for the movie adaptations. It's almost impossible taking any extended comic book run and boiling it down to 80-90 minutes, especially when they use "alternative" versions of familiar characters. Even a proper Watchmen adaptation would take several hours.

Watched the Catwoman joint tonight and thought it was decent. I liked the anime aesthetic, including how they borrowed Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack. Could have done without
though. Mike Ehrmamtraut voicing Black Mask was a little distracting as well.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films
This Constantine short is apparently the last of the New 52 DCAU arc that started a decade ago with Flashpoint Paradox. I had no idea this was coming out so I decided to rewatch all of them in honor of this release. It’s amazing that these series of animated films fulfills what the DC Snyderverse was trying to be. I wonder is Snyder and the live action part of DC were even aware of what they were doing over in the animated DTV division?
