DVDs with cuts of the films missing from the Blu-rays
 

What DVDs do you know of that have a missing cut of a film that is missing from the blu-ray? Theatrical cuts, extended cuts, director's cuts. I'm region free, so I am taking foreign blu's can override domestic DVDs. Not worried about special features/extras.

If you see any of these listed below that are available in any region (A, B, or C) on Blu, let me know.

The Matrix one is odd. The theatrical release had a green tint, the DVD seems to be oddly natural color, the blu-ray seems to be more of a blue tint instead of green.

Grabbed that from the UK. Good thinking on Man films though. Are there still versions of Manhunter not available on any of the Blu-rays? How about Heat or Last of the Mohicans, I know he likes to tinker.

The inability to see The Warriors in HD vexes me the most in that list.
The Alien color grading bothers me quite a bit, but I adjust my display setting to mitigate that problem a bit and everything else about the release is stellar.
But there's no way to avoid seeing those amateurish transitions in Warriors unless you step down to standard def. And that's a real shame 'cause the PQ on the Bd seems exceptionally strong otherwise.

Would love to own this on Bd, but I won't till they wise up.

You can take off Heat from the list. This was a good article posted on the Blackhat thread by WhySoBlu. Mann states the only 2 movies where he never changed a frame is The Insider and Heat.

Will remove Heat. Looks like 2 versions of Last of the Mohicans are only on DVD, the Theatrical and 1st Director's cut. Do you know which specific DVD I need to buy for the theatrical cut? I see mentions of UK and Germany.

I just recall the UK DVD being the theatrical cut. I think there's only 1 release in the UK for it, so I'm guessing that's the one. I remember reading a few years ago that the theatrical was available via iTunes, but I just checked and it's the so-called "Definitive" cut.

Watchmen DVD has the Theatrical. We never got that on BD.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - the DVD has the 91 min. unrated version, whereas the Blu-ray only contains the R-rated theatrical cut that runs about 87 min.

these lists only pertain to US releases, the lists do not comprise of other country releases - which opens up alternate versions ten fold.

I believe the unrated cut of Live Free or Die Hard is not on blu-ray.

Nice. Will need to sit down and do some work with it. The Dances with Wolves example doesn't work in my case. Both versions are available on blu, different regions, but on blu. I am region free. Now the New World example is just what I am looking for.

The blu-ray is the edited version. The Ass Kickin Edition dvd is the unedited version.

Lethal Weapon 1-3 all have director's cuts on DVD. The extra was footage was only available as deleted scenes on Blu-ray.

Troy theatrical cut has only been available on DVD and HDDVD.

If I recall, The Godfather Part III Director's cut has only been available on VHS.

I think The Replacements Killers theatrical cut is exclusive to DVD.

I think Canada got the unrated cut on Blu-ray, while the U.S. only got the theatrical cut.

Fragile (2005) U.S. DVD Theatrical Version (censored for PG-13). German Blu-ray is uncut (R-Rated).

Carriers (2009) U.S. DVD Theatrical Version (censored for PG-13). German Blu-ray is uncut (R-Rated).

Not sure if this counts, but...

The Nun (2005) U.S. DVD is zoomed to 1.77:1, the German Blu-ray is in beautiful 2.35:1 widescreen (OAR).

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK -- theatrical cut is missing from all Blu-ray releases of the film, which have only the director's cut, which is shorter. Also THX 1138 original theatrical cut is missing from the Bluray, while laserdisc remains the only way to get it.

What footage is missing from the DVD of CARRIERS that the German Blu restores? They both seem to be 84 minutes in length. Is it only a few seconds of footage, as the director has alluded to?

All three releases VHS: 'The Final Director's Cut', the DVD and bluray have the exact running time of 170 minutes

I remember reading that the MPAA had a lot problems with the violence and demanded some cuts for the movie's R-rating notably the silly 'death by glasses' murder scene

we'll have to wait and see what Criterion is rumoured to be doing with their 2015 release of the movie on bluray - in the mean time I put the DVD in with my bluray copy to make a deluxe edtion sans the theatrical cut only being in standard definition.

Aw daaamn. I forgot all about those colored tapes! I think Paramount only did that right? Seem to remember Ghost being white and Hunt for Red October red. A lot of their Nickelodeon shows were orange.

Johnny Mnemonic was orange and came with a plastic case that was see-thru near the Johnny's forehead, where you could see the tape reel in his head.

I remember the Rocky Horror Picture Show cassette was partially pink.

The Punisher (2004) and Fantastic Four (2005) BDs have theatrical but not extended cuts.
Daredevil and Elektra have director's cuts but not theatrical
Blade: Trinity US BD has the unrated cut, the Canadian release has the theatrical cut
Dead Alive BD has the US unrated cut, not the original uncut version (aka Braindead) or the R-rated US cut (tho I'm sure no one's missing that one)
Army of Darkness US BD only has theatrical, but some overseas releases have director's cut and International version. There's also a TV cut that's only available in SD.
Re-Animator US BD only has the unrated cut, some overseas releases have the R-rated and 'hybrid' (all footage from both versions) cuts
For Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, the US BD only has the theatrical cut, the Canadian BD has the unrated cut
Dawn of the Dead (1978) US BD only has the theatrical cut, apparently the Japanese release also has the original and Argento cuts

Both versions run 84 minutes. However, the PG-13 Version has nine scenes censored, sixteen words censored ("fuck") and five alternate (harmless) scenes added. I believe those added alternate scenes made up for the missing time caused by the censored scenes. I believe the Basic Instinct 2 and Mr. and Mrs. Smith BDs only have the theatrical cuts while the DVDs had Unrated cuts.

All video releases of Godfather III have been the Director's Cut. Coppola fell behind during post-production and was forced to release the movie in an unfinished state in order to meet his mandated Christmas release date. He finished the movie a couple months later in time for the VHS release. His final cut is the only version ever released on video.

Mann can say what he wants in an interview, but when the Heat Blu-ray was released, a number of people noticed that he'd cut a couple lines of Pacino's dialogue that are present on the DVD.

This reminds me of Mann's commentary for the so-called "Director's Cut" of Manhunter, where he talks about his favorite line of dialogue in the movie, not realizing that he'd cut the line from the version of the movie he's watching.

Mann reworks his movies so frequently, that even he can't keep track of what's in them or not in them anymore.

Mann is not providing correct information. Heat was changed when released on Blu-Ray. There's even a note on the back of the case stating the film has been changed. They are small changes, but they are there. The changes are described on movie-censorship (I don't have enough posts to be allowed to post a link yet).

In the theatrical cut, the shot keeps showing Justine, the Blu-Ray version cuts to Vincent who looks pretty bored while his wife is having a monolouge. Here, the first part of her line "You sift through the detritus..." was left out, the shot of Vincent in the BD version is therefore a little shorter than the successive scene with Justine in the TC.
