I don't own a 3D HDTV, and I'm just surprised by all the uproar about Big Hero 6 not getting a 3D disc. I thought the 3D HDTV & BDs weren't exactly huge sellers and on everyone's wish list. That being said, I'll probably get one of the 2D releases coming out on Tuesday. |

I've got at least 75% of every US 3D Blu-Ray issued so far, some of which I bought even before I had a 3D TV- it just made sense to have the 3D version right away when I could still watch it in 2D in the meantime. What Disney is doing is absolutely insulting- first they hyped 3D, overpriced it then complained about low sales, so then they yanked it and made it streaming-only but kept putting discs out in other countries. My parents got me "Frozen" when they went to Italy next year, I'll either order Big Hero 6 or see if my friend will pick it up when he goes to England later this year.

Wins the Best Animated Feature Oscar, but can't get a 3D release in its own country.

Does 3-D not have much market traction in the US and have more overseas?
|
Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Depends who you ask- I've heard that Disney has been "very unhappy" with 3D sales in the US, but on the other hand Kino, a much smaller company, released an old lesser-known 3D movie called "The Bubble" and said they were pleased with how that's sold so far. I'm suspecting Disney wants to push that digital nonsense as you can buy their MIA 3D movies that way, but that might not be as well-established in other countries so they still get discs.

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Even if Disney were "very unhappy" with 3D sales, they could offer the add-on 3D disc like they did with Oz The Great & Powerful. As long as they cover their costs, I fail to see what the problem is for them. They already have the 3D conversion and the best way to increase demand for 3D TVs is my having enough movies for people to buy. I don't get this at all. And I don't know if I should buy this tomorrow or just buy someone's digital copy and wait for the UK version (if it's indeed compatible).

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Even theatrically, 3D doesn't have much traction in the US markets. I notice that for most 3D theatrical releases, 2D screenings outnumber 3D screenings at least 2-1. And this is at a theater that is 3D capable on every screen.

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
As I've said countless times, there shouldn't even BE separate 2D showings at theaters and the greedy studios shouldn't charge more for them either! I don't see many 3D movies at the theater because of the price (but I don't just go to a cheaper 2D showing either!)
|
Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Around here 2D showings are cheaper. I prefer them to 3D showings.
|
Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
My problem with 3D is that unless it's gimmicky, my eyes adjust and I sort of forget that I'm watching a 3D movie about a quarter of the way in. I don't really notice it. As such, I don't feel it's worth the upcharge.

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
If studios forced 3D into theaters I'd probably see a lot less films in theaters. I really don't like 3D as it tends to give me a headache so even if there wasn't a price difference I'd probably pass on going to a lot of films in that case (I doubt it ever would become standard anyways).
I'm almost tempted to pick this film up from Target right away this week as I didn't realize they're offering a steelbook version. Might hold off on it for a while though. |

The Target Steelbook is really nice, best one in a while.

Why does the thread title have quotes? It negates the thread showing up when you search for it.
Search functionality would be a strong argument in favor of not using single quote marks (even less desirable than double quotes).

Also, extra-hilarious : Wal-Mart is selling this http://t9.wal.co/i/p/00/78/69/36/84/...im-180x180.jpg for $18.90 and right next to it on the shelf they're selling this http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/78...07_180X180.jpg for $24.99. What's the difference? That second one (with the identical cover, but different sticker) comes with a scanable code on the printed receipt for instant access to a Vudu copy on your account while the $6 cheaper one requires you to redeem the code later. Yeah, that won't be at all confusing to the average Wal-Mart consumer. |

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Yeah, the steelbook was a pain to get; Target didn't limit it to one per customer, at least around here, and when I went in at 7 minutes past opening they were wiped out, with the worker getting the last batch from the back as people circled.

Normal version from Amazon for me.

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Got my Steelbook today. Arrived at the store 45 min after they opened and they hadnt even gotten them on the shelves yet.

Re: 'Big Hero 6' (Feb. 24th)
Picked up a Steelbook copy they thankfully put aside for me after they finally located them this morning (the rest were long gone). It's really beautiful and colorful. Love the graphic on the back cover as well. Thank you mh4268 for the heads-up this morning
I got the best of both worlds because my collegue was going to buy a vanilla copy of the movie. I sold her my unopened regular Combo pack from the Wal-Mart gift set for $19 (to save her a couple of bucks) and kept the bonus disc that I really wanted for my son. |
