To replace these Criterions now you just have to send photos of the discs and they mail you out replacements. You don't have to mail in the old discs.

Just curious, what exactly did you have to send by email? Do you have to show the shiny side all clouded out, or do you have to write on it or anything?

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
I'm updating this thread with a recent list I was sent. I have at least ten movies from this list that I have to replace. I'll be spending the next few days going through my titles and getting together all of the necessary proof. Walkabout was the first title that I noticed there was a problem with. That disc is pure bronze.
8 1/2 Bigger than Life For All Mankind Gomorrah In the Realm of the Senses Kagemusha Lola Montes M Monsoon Wedding Monterey Pop (DISC ONE only) Paris, Texas Revanche Ride with the Devil Sanjuro Seventh Seal, The Stagecoach Summer Hours Vivre sa Vie Walkabout Wings of Desire These out of print titles are currently still being replaced Days of Heaven Howards End Le Cercle Rouge Pierrot le Fou |

Bringing this thread back from the dead to remind people that Criterion still replaces these.
I never dealt with this issue and finally went back through all my potential discs. I have about 7 titles that are on the list that dsa_shea posted above and will be watching each one throughout the next few days to check for errors. |
Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
I went through the list and compared them to the ones that I own and actually have 15 of those titles. Most of the discs clearly have problems. I need to check a couple more but I'm most likely going to need a replacement for each of them. I give Criterion a lot of credit for taking care of their customers in regards to this.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
I just tried my Days of Heaven and Wings of Desire discs and they played fine. I’m sure I got them on release day so likely first pressings. Should I be asking for replacements anyway? Will they eventually fail? They didn’t look particularly bronze to me.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
The best way to tell if your disc from the list is defective is by looking on the underside of the disc (the shiny side) and if you see the letters 'BVDL' your disc will be fine. If you don't see those letters you should have it replaced. --- We have confirmed that certain Blu-ray discs pressed at a replication facility that we used for a period in 2010 have become defective, showing a noticeable bronze discoloration on the underside and developing playback problems. We have confirmed the problem for select titles, but not on all copies of these titles. All of these titles have since been re-pressed at a different pressing plant, and the vast majority of discs in circulation should not be affected. The confirmed potentially affected Blu-ray titles are: 8 1/2 Bigger than Life For All Mankind Gomorrah In the Realm of the Senses Kagemusha Lola Montes M Monsoon Wedding Monterey Pop Paris, Texas Revanche Ride with the Devil Sanjuro Seventh Seal, The Stagecoach Summer Hours Vivre sa Vie Walkabout Wings of Desire Days of Heaven - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced Howards End - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced Le Cercle Rouge - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced Pierrot le Fou - the version released 2008-2010 is out of print but affected discs are still being replaced with our 2020 version of the release Not all runs of these discs were affected with disc rot. If your disc is displaying discoloration and/or having playback issues, please report it. Replacements will be honored for the foreseeable future, so there's no rush to request a new copy if there's no apparent problem. |

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
12 of the 15 of mine are verified problematic/unplayable, including one of my favorites: Paris, Texas. Criterion has been great with responding very quickly to my emails. I've already sent in the necessary photos and they have responded. Now I just have to wait until they send me the discs. Regardless, they have done great and I'm likely to once again start spending more money on their products as they continue to put out more 4k movies. They've also not started going down the road of continuing to creep prices up a few bucks every couple of months.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
In the past few days, I've watched more than half of the titles that I own from that list.
No issues with my copies of: Days of Heaven (1978) In the Realm of the Senses (1976) Yojimbo (1971) The Seventh Seal (1959) |
Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
Most of my bad copies have a good portion bronzed out and a few others might look ok but have some bad sectors in the disc. I would advise to check the special features as well. One of my movies could play the feature all the way through but went bad about 8 minutes in on a lengthy special feature and locked up.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
My copies of Le Cercle Rouge and Wings of Desire both had BVDL on them. I could not see it with the naked eye, but was able to see it with a picture taken at the right angle. However, my Days of Heaven didn't have it and it is definitely bronzing. I added that to my list and now I have 13 to be replaced. I'm thankful that Criterion is doing this. Kudos! I had several Lionsgate blu rays go bad and they likely would ignore you or tell you to buy another copy.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
I would probably err on the side of caution and consider replacing them instead of holding on. The process is rather simple, and you don't even have to send the discs in. I took all of my bad discs out and put them in a disc holder to keep them all together. Criterion replacing these discs and some other labels unwilling to do so or even listen has them in my good graces. These discs are all over ten years old as far as when they were replicated and they're still going to replace them. Thanks!

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'
Just an update on the 13 discs bad that I sent in all of the requested evidence on at the end of last week. I received a shipping notice today that my replacements are on the way. I'm impressed with the quick return on this.
