As I recall, it was kind of a crappy, edge-enhanced DVD. I still have it, but can't bring myself to watch it again.

OPPO Blu-ray players will let you move the position of subtitles up or down, so long as they're electronically-generated and not burned into the film print. If you move them down enough, you can push them off the screen. I believe there are specific models of other brands that have this feature as well, though I don't have a list.

Re: Criterion Wish List
While I can't say with 100% certainty that the film is not supposed to have them, these passages were never subtitled on the VHS, the Pioneer SE Laserdisc, or the first DVD release. And to me, every single scene just plays better without them
If the film were all in Spanish it would be one thing. But one of the themes of the film is the culture barrier that they are crossing as much as the geographical one. It also comes across as a much more adult film if you have to either know the language or be able to figure things out by context as the characters have to do. Having everything spelled out explicitly via the subs just seems to dumb it all down to me.
Anyways- I finally figured out how to utilize this feature and it worked like a charm, completely pushing the subs out of the image area. I can FINALLY watch one of my favorite actions films of all time again without any distractions!
Absolutely love this DVD player. Worth every penny.
