The Blacklist -- The Complete First Season -- August 12, 2014

Confirming the date we previously reported, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has today formally announced The Blacklist - The Complete 1st Season for release on August 12th. The studio has also verified the pricing show last fall at Amazon.com, with $69.99 SRP for a 5-disc DVD version, and $75.99 SRP for a 5-disc Blu-ray set. The BD version will also come with UltraViolet digital copies of the episodes, and both disc versions will include closed captioning plus subtitles in English and French. You'll also get extras that include Audio Commentaries, "Beyond the Blacklist" Featurettes, "The Insider: Behind the Scenes of Season 1" and - exclusive to Blu-ray - you'll get Character Dossiers, "Inception: Making the Pilot," and "Rogues' Gallery: The Blacklisters." Here's an official Sony-provided look at the Blu-ray Disc packaging:

Probably the biggest new drama hit from last season. I like the show and Spader was fantastic. I'm in no hurry to re-live it.

For those who didn't watch it, the show is mostly procedural, but mixes in some serialized arcs throughout the season. I would say it's 70% procedural and 30% serial.

I liked this show less as weeks went on - when Spader wasn't on screen, I found it almost insufferable. I like the serialized stuff and Spader is fantastic - but all other aspects just felt tired to me. I'm probably not going to watch it again anytime soon but I am hoping they can tweak it a bit to improve in Season 2 because all the elements are there for a great show, they just aren't utilizing them all yet IMO.

Special features include commentary on three key episodes and two all-new featurettes. "The Insider: Making Season One" takes viewers through the freshman season with the cast, writers and executive producers, from brainstorming the weekly Blacklisters to developing character relationships. In addition, there are 22 episodes of "Beyond the Blacklist," offering a behind-the-scenes look at each of episodes. Exclusively available on Blu-ray are two additional featurettes. That's only a suggested MSRP

This will be about $35-40 release week.

I haven't seen the show...is this a good blind buy, or the kind of series where the episodes aren't that re-watchable?

I personally would give season 1 a B

James Spader is fantastic. Megan Boone, who is the female lead, is a little rough at first, but she grows during the course of the 22 weeks.

As I said earlier in this thread, the show is about 70% procedural and 30% serialized. The Blacklist cases of the week are usually the main focus of the show, but they also touch on the serialized elements a little in each episode. There are several multi-episode arcs that are fantastic.

There are some forgettable and filler episode as with any action procedural. But for the most part, season 1 is a very solid show. I know you like 24, and there are elements of 24 in this show as well.

This was NBC's biggest drama hit from last season. People were watching & in the TV Talk forum as well.

I agree with DJariya. The show is passive entertainment for me. I enjoy it enough to watch during broadcast, but I don't think it would be very rewatchable and don't feel that it's worth owning.

This would be a good candidate to catch up with the first season on Netflix, if it's available there.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the first season, and liked the twists. I don't know that I would rewatch it though. Spader is awesome in this, but I would at least watch an episode or two before blind buying.

That's a great deal for anyone on the fence, this is a great quality set as well. The picture and sound beats the HD broadcasts and Netflix streaming by a long shot.

Some folks on avsforum are raving about the quality of the 4K stream of this show on Netflix. I've not seen it yet (have not done Netflix on my new 4K set yet). Of course, to view the 4K streams, you need at least 15mbps down and you need to be on the $11.99 streaming plan.
