I finally got the DVD last week.

Question: How much better could this look based on what they shot it on? Not saying that it can't... but...you know.

Yeah it will have to be a significant upgrade over my UK BD to double dip.

The movie looked like absolute garbage when I saw it in the theater. I believe that was a 35mm film-out from digital. I've had the UK Blu-ray for a while now but haven't gotten around to watching it to see if that looks any better.

The movie was shot with a Sony HVR-Z1, which was a 1080i prosumer camera designed for broadcast use (as in, news footage). It was never intended for movie work, especially not for shooting the type of nighttime, natural lighting exteriors that this movie is filled with.

Never saw this movie. Any good or just an okay curiosity?

Was the song overplayed somewhere? I don't listen to radio or anything like that. I've only heard the songs in the context of the film.

There's currently a Broadway show based on the movie, and the song has gotten a lot of air play and publicity as a result of that.

I don't know about recent exposure because of the Broadway play, but the song got a hell of a lot of exposure back when the movie was released, what with it winning the Oscar for Best Original Song and all. Hansard and Irglova got a lot of exposure performing it on talk show appearances and everywhere else.

IIRC, the HD master that currently exists is pulled directly from the digital source material and not the 35mm print (like say 28 Days Later).

It's an incredible movie with great music. The UK Blu-ray doesn't look that great, I doubt this edition will look any different. You buy this movie on Blu-ray to hear the soundtrack in lossless form.

I'd also hope you'd buy the bluray (if you don't have the DVD already) for the story and the characters too.
