Drafthouse Films Presents - Ms. 45 Uncut (coming 2014)

Crazy movie, I hope Drafthouse goes all out with this release.

Drafthouse Films Unholsters Ms. 45

At Drafthouse Films we're huge admirers of Abel Ferrara, so there's no greater pleasure for us than announcing our acquisition of the North American rights to Ferrara’s 1981 revenge thriller classic Ms. 45. The film follows a mute garment-district seamstress – played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund – who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable assaults, ignites a one-woman homicidal rampage against New York City’s entire male population. Now remastered in HD from the original negative materials, Ms. 45 returns to theaters this December and will debut on DVD and Blu-ray uncut for the first time in North America early next year.

The fiercely independent auteur Abel Ferrara debuted with his infamous 1979 D.I.Y. cult classic The Driller Killer, which established his signature fusion of NYC, despair, calculated stylish flourishes and idiosyncratic humor. Two years later, his follow-up feature Ms. 45 starred the then 18-year-old Zoë Lund, and explored similar themes while executing a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre. In Brad Stevens’ biography “Abel Ferrara: The Moral Vision”, Ferrara recalls of the film, “it shook people up to see an innocent person like themselves suddenly becoming a wanton murderer.” Combining the rampaging angst of 1976’s Death Wish and Roman Polanski’s surreal, post-traumatic Repulsion, Ms. 45 returns from the cult underground over 30 years later to reclaim its title as perhaps the most shocking, complex and empowering vigilante film of the 1980s.

“One of the primary missions with Drafthouse Films is to build a selection of films which destroy the barriers between 'art-house' and 'grindhouse," says our Creative Director Evan Husney, "and Abel Ferrara's work embodies just that. Ms. 45 is one of those fringe ‘80s films that has been somewhat marginalized as pure exploitation, so we are beyond thrilled to reintroduce it to a new audience of cinephiles."

Join the Drafthouse Alliance today to receive Ms. 45 on home video before its street date!

Fans can download two tracks from the film’s original soundtrack (soon to be released for the first time ever by UK’s Death Waltz Records) for free right here: bit.ly/Ms45Download

Awesome. I just watched a mediocre bootleg of this last month. Definitely in for this edition.

Mine! Mine! Mine! I don't think this distrubitor (Alamo Drafthouse) is known to charge an arm and a leg either.

I wish we would get The Addiction on Blu-ray. One of the main reasons I imported the new Masters of Cinema Nosferatu Blu-ray was due to there being like a 10-15 minute interview with Ferrara talking about the film and how some of it influenced The Addiction.

King of New York is another classic but I'll probably import the Arrow release of that one.

Shit, now that I think about it, most of his catalog isn't available on BD yet. That needs to be changed ASAP.

I would love a Blu of The Funeral. You hear me Lion's Gate?

Also got my ticket to the 12/15/13 screening in San Francisco. Pretty excited about that too!

Re: Drafthouse Films Presents - Ms. 45 Uncut (coming 2014)

Got a chance to see this at the Hollywood Theater here in Portland tonight. The last time I saw this on the big screen was at the drive-in when it first came out. I remember it being dark and hard to see a lot of the night scenes. This restoration is incredible with no problem seeing the night scenes now. Looking forward to the blu-ray release! It is a shame Zoe died so young.

Did you have the issue at your screening where the flesh tones (sometimes) running hot? I saw it in San Francisco yesterday and that was a problem sometimes.

I didn't know if it was an issue with the theater or the transfer (which was beautiful as you said).

Did not notice the flesh tones running hot at all. When Zoe put on the bright red lipstick it made me think of how pale she was to begin with. I don't think the picture could have been better!

I'm guessing my experience had to do with the theater I was at. Overall the quality looked great and I can't wait for this release.

Also worth mentioning is the guy that sat next to me during the San Francisco screening, walked out after the early scenes.

Yeah, I'm excited for this. Already ordered the poster from Drafthouse - got my Amazon order locked at like $22. Very happy.

Re: Drafthouse Films Presents - Ms. 45 Uncut (coming 2014)

I read a review, I don't if it was here or another site, of the DVD that features the original film poster art, but altered in purple. When I looked it up on Amazon it says it's an import, all region. Is this version good, or is the Drafthouse version the one that Amazon says will be released this March?

Saw a bit of the trailer and it looked pretty good and I haven't bought any DVDs for awhile so I want to check this one out.
