I wondered about that too!

I think the delay was actually smart in retrospect. Thanks to delaying this until after Aloha's theatrical release, Vanilla Sky has actually shifted in the ledger from being one of Cameron Crowe's worse films to one of his better ones.

I never got the hate for the movie either, some people I talked to make it sound like they couldn't grasp what was happening, which I really don't understand... it was all rather simplistic.

It was like a pretty upgrade to Abres Los Ojos, sort of like The Ring to Ringu. Different but the same and much nicer looking. I saw Abres Los Ojos sometime in 99, was a good time period for those "Reality is not Reality" movies and I thought VS did a good job with the story overall

That just means they didn't send it to the MPAA, ot that it contains any naughty NC-17 moments

How is it that this is a catalog release with new special features and it's cheaper than most new catalog releases with no or ported SD features?

Yeah I know. Was a couple months ago when I posted, but I think what I was saying was that there were two separate versions on this release.

Cuz it's a catalog release. One w/ little popularity compared to newer films that are very fresh w/ people and it's not a catalog film that has a massive popularity compared to say.... Blade Runner, where people wouldn't mind paying full price for.

Was looking forward to upgrading this, but I was banking on the video quality being vastly improved. Doesn't seem to be the case.

I'll have my full review posted in a day or two, but yeah, it's nothing to get excited about. Clarity, depth, and color take enough of a step up over the DVD to be worth the current $8-10 entry fee (along with the audio and extras), but, in general, it lacks fine detail through a haze and struggles with noise and mediocre contrast. Sounds rather solid, though.

The alternate ending was, simply, Crowe's attempt at more closely duplicating the original Spanish film's conclusion. The quality of the footage also takes a nosedive at that point, which detracts from the new branched viewing experience. Details of the ending itself below:

Spoiler:
Starting just after the conversation with Tilda Swinton's character, the alternate ending: a) incorporates a bathroom conversation between David and McCabe after what's discovered about LE and the dream reality; b) changes the empty lobby scene into a shootout with lots of people around, which includes more time with Michael Shannon's cop character; and c) tweaks the characters on the rooftop a bit so that McCabe's more fraught about all the deceit, and so Technical Support is kind of a smartass. The ending dialogue between David and Sofia is essentially the same, but extended and with different delivery.

Crowe's trimmed-down, subtler take on the ending is, in my opinion, easily superior to the ho-hum execution of the more shot-for-shot replication.

My copy should be arriving today. At 8 bucks and some change, unless its a total ball drop, I'll be more than happy to upgrade my dvd. The new extras look impressive and while the picture might be "soft", it'll be more than sufficient I'm sure. Besides, it's got Kurt Russell, so I'm almost good automatically

Totally forgot I had this on order. Abre Los Ojos finally comes out on solo Blu-ray August 1st (import), which is only available in an Amenabar collection.

It's worth more. I really don't understand why they've kept it so low, while other catalog titles hover near the $20 range for so long.....

Been watching it. Sucks the picture looks the way it does. Oh well, it was cheap, that's the main motivator as to why I got it. And the alternate ending.

Overall, yes. And I'm not one to nitpick on the PQ too much, but if I can notice it easily, I'm sure most of you will.

Now I know why Amazon is selling it so cheaply. You can't find this title, for the most part, in store anywhere! I would of bought this if I could walk into a Target or Best Buy and pick it up. Guess I'll have to wait until I have something else to buy at Amazon to get this.
