Cool. Reading up on it at cnet right now. Seems like a steal at its current price.

Do you game on it as well?

I've read good things about the 616. So that's a good purchase.

As for Neo:X, since I'm only hooked up as a 5.2 setup, I really only have Neo:X in name only. Would love to try out the 5010's 11.1 capability, though. :)

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

It's an excellent TV. I do game on it, and have noticed no lag or burn-in. I did do 100 hours of panel prep, but that was more about aging the phosphors correctly and shouldn't have an effect on burn-in.

As for sound, there's no point right now in having a system that's higher than 7.1 (mine is 7.2 which already seems mainly pointless), because other than a few Neo:X titles, what content is taking advantage of more than 7.1 channels of sound? And even Neo:X isn't 11 real channels of sound, as far as I can gather.

Now, if we start to see at-home Dolby Atmos setups, then things might get interesting.

How'd you do the first 100 hours? Is the preferred method still playing a disc with alternating solid color images? I ask since I've never had a Plasma before.

I read that the set doesn't include any 3D glasses but is compatible with the newer ones that comply to the FHD3D standard. So which glasses did you go with?

I'm guessing games will be the ones to eventually take advantage of Neo:X. FPS games and/or games like Uncharted and Tomb Raider would sound pretty awesome taking advantage of extended height and width.

And technically speaking, Dolby Atmos isn't really channels either. At least that's not what comes across in the verbiage. Dolby's own words on the subject make me think of realtime multichannel sound in video games but applied to movies. So I don't doubt we'll eventually get Atmos at home once they iron out any backwards compatibility kinks.

Dredd - 8/10: A very good reboot and one I wish could end up in a movie series. Karl Urban puts Stallone to shame, and Thirlby is a doll.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

I did the first 100 hours using solid color slides. If you go to AVS forum they usually either have threads about calibration (which includes break-in for plasma), or links to threads about them for specific model televisions. I did the break-in and then tweaked my settings based on calibrator recommended levels. I just ran them off an SD card since my TV has an SD card slot.

I went with the Panasonic branded glasses: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TY-E...nic+3d+glasses

They're pricey (although less expensive when I bought them), but I wanted to make sure that the glasses were compatible without a doubt because I would be using them for reviews such as Dredd. If other cheaper glasses do work, let me know. I might pick up one or two as extras for guests or backup to my main pair.

Lately, I've been experimenting with its Audyssey Dynamic EQ + Dynamic Volume options. It takes some getting used to (I had to lower my typical movie volume of -10 dB or -14 dB to -32 dB for most movies) but the results are usually favorable with a lot of movies (and even most TV programming once you fine tune the settings).

Overall, I'm extremely happy with it. It also runs much cooler than my old TX-SR705.

Keep in mind that if you want to use Neo:X 11.2, you'll need an external amplifier as the receiver can only power a 9.2 setup on its own.

Awesome, thanks for your thoughts on it. I think this may be a pickup for me in the next month or two.

Finally saw Dredd as well. Damn entertaining, and in all the right ways, not the Stallone way. Watched it in 2D though, I'll be watching it in the mancave again tonight - in 3D that is.

No problem. Lemme know when you get it so we can discuss the different setup options. It's very much a plug and play receiver (thanks in no small part to Audyssey MultEQ XT32) but has plenty of options for you to really tweak the sound (and even the video) of each input to your liking. :)

Anyone have any problem with their player reading this disc? My Toshiba BDX2000 wouldn't read it at all. I'm chalking it up to it being old, no longer supported by Toshiba and having had issues a while back with most Lionsgate discs.

Just wanted to make sure though, no one else had a similar issue.

Took just a bit longer than usual to load, but other than that, no issues with playback on my Sony player.

No problems here on the Oppo BDP-83. Long load times though as others have seen.

Had no problems with the PQ - I saw a few shots with a kind of weird bluish static-y type of look but the whole movie is stylized so it didn't really bother me.

Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what is a long load time for you guys? For me Disney and Lionsgate stuff is the worst; some Disney BDs have taken 3 mins or more to load to a point that I can get to a menu.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

Lionsgate is technically the slowest. By seconds, though, which is cool, because Lionsgate discs tend to have updates and they actually install themselves automatically as opposed to having the system do it.

Yeah...if it takes minutes. Something is very wrong. Should never take more than 6-10 secs for a disc to load up normally. As said, LG actually gives a damn about their stuff so they update as much as they can. Sounds like your player is getting old and worthless there.

Its takes a some time to load on my non 3D samsung player, but no problems. The one that takes the longest is the Star Wars Blurays.

Sad to see that the 2D on this film wasn't as cared for as the 3D one. Some shots will clean and/or gritty while others are just murky and unvalued in image. Otherwise...I still love the film. Cool features. Really wish we got a commentary from Garland, Travis, and/or Karl Urban.

What? The video on the 2D looks great, imo.

I agree. And this isn't a case of a different master for the 2D version. It's just one "eye" of the 3D presentation.

Yep. I took it back to Best Buy the other day. I set it on the counter and the guy said, "Defective?" before I even had a chance. Obviously they've seen a lot of returns. He said it was recalled, and they didn't have any. I didn't verify that, so I'm not sure how official it is.

Wow, I love this movie, wish there was a possibility for a sequel. Weird how I could say the same thing for Priest, also both excellent 3D Blu-Rays.

There may be. While it tanked in the theaters (actually $40 million worldwide), apparently it's been a huge hit and selling really well in all formats; DVD, blu-ray and digital downloads. It's already more than made it's money back. Add to that how pretty much everyone who watches it has enjoyed it, the outlook for a sequel isn't too bad.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

Finally hooked up my TX-NR5010 with wide speakers (need to figure out how I'd place the heght speakers) using DTS Neo:X and fired up the minigun scene from Dredd. Wow! It really helps widen the soundstage. I even tried it with a few other flicks (The Adventures of Tin Tin really benefits from steering certain sounds to the wide speakers) and it works wonders.

Sadly, it seems DTS is ditching the wide speakers from future Neo:X configurations and focusing on height channels (front and back) instead.

You'll love it. If your bitstreaming, be sure to actively select Neo:X on you receiver. DTS added channel duplification to their newer decoders (even my 5010 does this) based on how many speakers are hooked up to you receiver. Selecting Neo:X makes a world of difference as the matrixed sound is much better than the duplicated channels.

Yes. I think movie theater managers hate me because I'd never let it slide when they'd screw up the audio in the slightest.

Though I've mellowed out of late and just grown to accept that it'll sound better at home.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

http://www.slashfilm.com/dont-totall...d-film-sequel/

Briefly: Want to see a film sequel to Dredd, rather than a comic book sequel? You’re not alone, and some of the people who want to see a sequel film are the people who are in the position to make it. We’ve heard before that talks have taken place about a possible sequel, and star Karl Urban says “conversations are taking place between the studio, the director and writer Alex Garland.” That was at a recent Star Trek convention, where Urban was queried about a possible sequel.

We’ve heard that before, but fans will likely be somewhat heartened to know that those talks haven’t totally broken down. Hope springs eternal, even in a hellhole like Mega-City One.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/08/13

Fans have had such a collective hard-on for a sequel for so long that it couldn't possibly live up to expectations. Why they don't just do a TV series is beyond me. It would be easier, cheaper, and probably turn out better than a movie.

hanshotfirst1138 05-19-14 07:49 AM

You couldn't do that kind of ultraviolent R-rated content on a TV show. Plus, with the number of episodes, wouldn't that be even more expensive?
