I was pretty excited when the 2008 DVD was announced and picked it up almost immediately on release. That's very strange. My local store didn't have this issue. The 3 copies that have been there since the start of the sale were there when I went tonight. I wonder what was the issue? (Or lack there of?) I'm going to finish up this sale tomorrow, while I'm out I'm going to ask about this title again and see what the deal is... I'm starting to think that I should grab a couple mainstream titles that are very popular to use as trade-bait for the OOP's that I missed... (The Man who Fell to Earth, The Third Man, Pierrot Le Fou) |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore The Darjeeling Limited |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Godzilla
The Magician Shallow Grave Kuroneko Anatomy of a Murder Cul-de-Sac |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
And more:
Rushmore High and Low Amarcord Sweet Smell of My Success |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
I pretty much got everything from The Gold Rush to Videodrome in the My Collection link below. I'm still waiting to receive the following from B&N, and I may order the Samurai Trilogy before the sale ends:
Carlos Battle of Algiers (BD) The Leopard The Secret of the Grain Broadcast News Certified Copy Wings of Desire Throne of Blood (DVD) The Thin Red Line The 39 Steps EDIT: Re: Salo. It's been in my "maybe" pile forever and it always ends up getting pushed off from a purchase by other titles. Submersive films are not something I take offense to, but the overall negative comments I've read about this film have ended up delaying my purchase. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
I think this is my final list - the only other ones I'm considering are Design for Living and WR: Mysteries of the Organism (on DVD.)
Quadrophenia (The salesperson saw me browsing the Criterions and told me that I could preorder this at 50%. Unfortunately, I didn't ask about Lonesome or the Dardenne titles, which I want quite a bit more.) Certified Copy The Organizer Harold and Maude Godzilla The Gold Rush The Killing The Lady Vanishes Naked Playtime Summer Interlude Summer with Monika The 39 Steps A Hollis Frampton Odssey DVD: Paul Robeson: Portraits of an Artist Eclipse: Robert Downey Sr. Red Balloon/White Mane |

This is news to me... You should have done it and just exchanged product when they come out. At least you can lock in the price.

^ Yup. I asked about this in two stores and was told "no dice".

Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Only got 3 as well this time.
30 Steps Gimmie Shelter Last Days Of Disco. Already watched 39 Steps and Last Days, so I feel like this sale has actually been a success (even though I hated 39 Steps) since the point is to watch these, not just collect them. I would have bought more but an inventory of my Criterions put the unwatched number over 50- that's way too much money to have tied up in stuff I'm not actually using and enjoying or planning to use and enjoy anytime soon. There are about 50 or 60 other titles I would rather spin on any given night than Solaris or Senso. I do want to see them someday, but a lot of the stuff I've bought in these sales is feeling more like work than entertainment. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Why buy The 39 Steps if you hate it?

This. Bought 39 steps, watched it, hated it. Not This. Watched 39 steps, hated it, purchased it. I will say that I upgraded the 39 Steps without having really researched the new transfer, and was disappointed. For being such an early release on DVD by Criterion you'd think this Blu-ray would have been a bigger step up. It's not bad or anything, I just wish they had found a much better print in all those years- or done more restoration work on the current one. It was almost like watching the original DVD. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
39 Steps was actually the one title I was most anxious to get.
I'd watched it 10-15 (maybe more) years ago and remembered liking it quite a bit. Now, seeing the same contrivances show up again and again in Hitchcock's work, it all just rubbed me the wrong way. IIRC, I originally saw it before either Saboteur or North By Northwest, and at this point I prefer the other two in their handling of this kind of premise (wrong man on the run-with girl, out to stop spies) though both of those films also suffer the usual Hitchcock nonsense of 'ruthless adversaries' who have no problem coldly and efficiently dispatching the supporting cast, while at the same time giving their most dangerous opponent (the lead actor) every opportunity to live and frustrate their goal through one inefficent death trap after another. Donat is just not as interesting or likable to me as Cummings or Grant, so the film was a tough slog this time. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
I picked up
Le Cercle Rouge Carlos Shallow Grave The Samurai trilogy I'm still pondering Anatomy of a Murder and Branded to Kill. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Unqualified recommendation for Anatomy of a Murder. Though as an attorney who LOVES jazz, perhaps I'm a little biased. That being said, this film can be enjoyed by anyone and is one of the great Jimmy Stewart performances.
I actually discovered the film after first hearing Ellington's soundtrack, which is fantastic. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Only picked up Godzilla (couple days later two more copies were on the shelf) and Wages of Fear. Always wanted the latter so very excited to have the blu.

Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
My wife and I are buying our first house this year, so I took it easy this sale:

My haul for the sale:

Pretty much just the past couple months' worth of Criterions, which I held off on buying in anticipation of the sale. I'm pretty gosh darn nerdy, so I already have all their other BDs. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
I didn't think I'd be able to grab anything, but at the last second I decided to pick up The Gold Rush and Godzilla
|
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Great sale. The 3-hour overlap was epic and will be highly speculated/anticipated come November. -pray-
|
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Thought I was done, but I picked up Godzilla (BD) a week or so ago.

Is this sale running through today (Monday) or is already over? |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
I grabbed:
The 39 Steps The Lady Vanishes on Bluray On DVD: David Lean Directs Noel Coward Summer With Monika Three Popular Films by Jean-Pierre Gorin I wanted much more, but this is a big year of travel and celebrations in my family, so discretionary income is limited. |

Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Squeaked one more order in this morning with minutes left for Certified Copy.
Could have saved $2 if I'd hit the store yesterday when I was out, but I was worried I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to pick up more than that. Four titles total for me this sale- and even better I've watched 4 others from the unwatched pile while the sale was going on. This was still the lightest haul I've ever made in these sales. Feels good to not overindulge for a change. |
Re: Criterion Collection + B&N 50% Off = What did you get?
Ended up with:
Being John Malkovich World on a Wire Harold and Maude Godzilla Zazie dans le metro The Magician Samurai Trilogy A lot more than I had planned on picking up, but that's okay. |
