Alamo Drafthouse Presents: Drafthouse Alliance

Not buying into this, especially at $124.99. Granted, that's $12.50 per movie, but Tim League's producing ventures have been really hit and miss for me. But, this may be of interest for some. And of course they have numbered spines so...lookout Criterion.

It's a more blatant copy of the business model of Adam Yauch's Oscilloscope Laboratories with the subscription and everything but Criterion certainly inspired OL too.

I'm a member of the circle of trust, but will be passing on this. I will buy each release though to support, Tim League is great man.

Re: Alamo Drafthouse Presents: Drafthouse Alliance

PRO: Drafthouse Films' Blu-rays have an SRP of $29.99.
CON: Image Entertainment is Drafthouse's distributor and I'm sure the titles will be under $10 in no time just like Image's other releases.

PRO: Drafthouse makes it a point to announce that each film comes with a 720p HD digital copy of the film.
CON: The 720p HD digital copy of the film comes with the standard Blu-ray release as well.

PRO: Each film comes with the soundtrack available in 320kbps MP3.
CON: There's no con at all, that's pretty sweet.

PRO: You get exclusive access to Drafthouse Films events and screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and venues around the country.
CON: I don't live near an Alamo Drafthouse nor have they done any event in Vegas.

Yeah. I'll purchase The ABCs of Death and Electric Boogaloo when they come out on their own.

I'd rather cherrypick the titles I want, but the downloadable soundtracks are pretty sweet.

That actually sounds pretty sweet. As soon as I have $125.

Given that I'm less than a mile from their flagship cinema (Alamo S Lamar) and within 10 miles of 4 more in Austin... makes sense for me. Ooh, is that only 1 ticket for screenings though?

Tim League is a good man. Back in the day, he used to hold parties at his house and invite his theatergoers. That would probably turn into a mess nowadays though Always a very giving person and always open to chat with anyone.

Looking forward to their Cannon Films doc. LOVE Cannon films. Cmon, Drafthouse Films gave The FP a release... you've gotta respect anyone who sees a gem in that

I keep trying to get my girlfriend to go with me to his new bar that he opened in a former downtown brothel: Midnight Cowboy Oriental Massage. I keep getting an "ewww".

Living in Austin since before the inception of the Alamo Drafthouse, I used to really love the films and events that they brought to town. In fact, I was rather envious of League and his wife for making their awesome dream come true. But, now, I feel their empire is growing too huge and they're letting it get to their heads and the negative ramifications are trickling down to the theaters and other properties. The "high and mighty" verbiage about not talking in the theater has become really annoying. I understand, I don't like noisy people in theaters, either, but for fuck's sake, do you have to mention it in your oh-so-hipster way a hundred times before the damn movie starts? And now all the theaters in town are utilizing a "reserved seating" program that essentially fucks every normal theater-goer out of three rows of prime seating in the middle of the auditorium no matter how early you get there. The food and drinks continue to rise in price as quickly as the quality takes a nosedive. $8 for a 5 ounce Old Fashioned that tastes like ass? No, thanks. At least the $5 milkshakes are still $5, but they also have acquired that pesky ass flavor as of late. The new Midnight Cowboy bar at the old dubious massage parlor? Let's see...book your 2 hour window (no more, no less) days or weeks in advance so that you can be reminded that you absolutely cannot use your phone or show any sort of affection and/or flirtation with anyone not in your party, or else you get kicked the fuck out. Oh, but not before you pay your tab that consisted of not a single drink under $10. I still go to the downtown Drafthouse for the chance to see great cheesy movies from the 60s-80s cheaply during the Terror Tuesdays and Weird Wednesdays, but I refrain from purchasing any lousy food and just bite my tongue at all the hyperbole and amount of times they tell me to shut up. And I will never spend any amount of money for a movie like The FP.

I actually love the reserved seating... Its what? $2? I'll pay a small premium not to have to get to the theater an hour early.

Re: Alamo Drafthouse Presents: Drafthouse Alliance

It's $3 after you tack on the extra $1 "convenience fee" to buy your ticket online. It just goes with the increase in all their pricing. And from what I've heard, the whole thing's a mess anyway, with people sitting in your seats already before you get there and the staff not being able (or not wanting) to move those people that didn't pay the extra money. All while your movie is playing!

Re: Alamo Drafthouse Presents: Drafthouse Alliance

I have never had any issues with reserved seating... we do get there 15 minutes early to order drinks. Once there was someone sitting in one of the seats... I politely told them they were in our seats and they moved, no biggie.

Also, you can purchase them at the box office and get around the service fee.

Well, good to hear some people are enjoying it with no issues. I, on the other hand, had no problem getting in line early to ensure good seats at the normal cost. To me, this new practice just adds to the elitist attitude that seems to be washing over the whole Drafthouse moniker.

Is Drafthouse planning on issuing catalog titles on Blu-ray, or are these all DTV obscurities? The Cannon doc sounds like fun.

They're all films getting theatrical releases by Drafthouse Films. Some are independent films they've scored the rights to, others are foreign acquisitions and few are actual, original films.

Time Life and Columbia House have been doing this for decades. Nothing new here.

A lost Ted Kotcheff film saved from near-permanent extinction one week before it was set to be incinerated? Count me in on that one.

That's kind of the point, isn't it? Elitist folks tend to follow etiquette. Perhaps you prefer a more "common" attitude? Plenty of places you can find that, and exactly the opposite of what ADH is looking for.

If by saying I prefer a more "common" attitude, you are insinuating I am a rude, noise-making, rules-breaking asshole, you are wrong. Are you saying there is no middle ground between this type of person and an elitist? Give me a break. The Drafthouse was doing fine for years before slowly transforming to this snub-nosed hipster wonderland.

And no, there aren't plenty of other places that offer the same roster of 35mm showings from 60s-80s film.
