The Return of Hammer Films Studio
I noticed this advertised on the Woman in Black bluray. When did Hammer start back up? Any more details? I tried to do a search but couldn't find anything about their rebirth.

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
A few years ago. They have produced Wake Wood, The Woman In Black and Let Me In. I believe there were a couple of others too but I can't recall off hand.

Could be a good thing.

Maybe they can do something with their past releases, like release them all in bluray, that would be something.

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
Every few months they say they have a Blu-ray distributor for their new transfers in Region A, but nothing has been announced and there are few rumors as to what company did get the license in America. It's definitely not Shout Factory.

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
I have no idea why the announcement is taking so long, could the distributor be Synapse?

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
From the Hammer restoration blog:
The world premiere of our restored THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN will take place at the CATH/DMU Hammer event in Leicester on Saturday 14th July, preceded by Mark Gatiss in conversation with Jonathan Rigby...For the first time in many years, the film will be screened in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1 aka “Academy”. The film will also include the “eyeball” scene — restored from a reel of a print housed at the BFI then integrated into the main restoration, which was scanned from a Warner Bros. I/P — though not the “head in acid bath” scene, which despite our best efforts appears no longer to exist...For those of you who can’t make it, we hope to announce the UK Blu-ray release date at the event (we’ll tweet it immediately after announcing). |

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
From the same blog:
We also always thought the film was intended for 1.66:1 exhibition till we reviewed the entire film (4k open gate scan of I/P) open matte in a screening room. It is crystal clear, upon viewing, that the film was intended to be screened at 1.37:1. The framing is perfectly composed throughout at full frame and there are zero production artefacts in the frame at any point. |
Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
Wow. It's really troubling that the people "restoring" these films could be so ignorant of these aspect ratio and presentation matters. The film was made in 1957 for crying out loud. 35mm and spherical lenses...it was projected matted at 1:66 in Europe and 1:85 in the US. I don't care how good they think it looks unmatted.

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
ok. Sooooooo was it shot w/ that intention or just later framed differently later? History on this film?

Every time this comes up people who should know better act like there is some unique situation going on. There isn't. |

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
As long as they offer both versions, I won't care.

Via Twitter, they announced that Dracula (1958) will be released early next year, and that Richard Matheson was interviewed for the documentary to be included with Devil Rides Out.

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
Not going to lie; over the years, I've seen all the Hammer Dracula movies and, perhaps aside from the loopy Hammer/Shaw Bros. mashup Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, not a single one has done much for me.
On the other hand, I've seen all the Hammer Frankenstein films and loved each of them; The Curse of Frankenstein is my favorite entry in the series, so I cannot wait for this disc to get released. |

My absolute favorite Hammer flicks are some of the more obscure ones like Paranoiac and The Pirates of Blood River. Universal and Sony both put out some great Hammer sets on DVD that would be great to see in HD. |

Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
For U.S. releases, there's also The Man Who Could Cheat Death, on a double-bill with Amicus' The Skull.

That could push American releases back another year or more. |
Re: The Return of Hammer Films Studio?
I thought Lionsgate sat on basically their entire catalog? If they're the distributors, good luck!

The only other possibility I can think of is the mystery American distributor (heavily rumored to be Lionsgate at the moment) is waiting for the main Hollywood studios like Warner to release their classic Hammer BDs, to piggyback on the marketing effort.
That could push American releases back another year or more. |
