Leonard Part 6? I bought the DVD just because I figured that was the best release that turkey was ever going to get, and it was lucky to have just gotten that!

I really do like Hudson Hawk, but alas Hollywood Homicide is so bloody awful that its making reconsider this one. I'll probably cave at some point.

WAVE 3 (May 7th, 2013)
I've almost bought Anderson Tapes on dvd a handful of times (Sean Connery why else), but with this coming I'll gladly wait and pay my money. Oddly, this one has a high MSRP, I'm pretty sure that's a misprint though since nothing from Millcreek goes over $10 (and most are around $5).

FUTURE RELEASES CONFIRMED BY MILL CREEK & SONY
  • Fortress 2: Re-Entry
  • Hanky Panky
  • Hexed
  • Mary Reilly

Fortress 2 for completeness sake, Hanky Panky calls out the Gene Wilder fan in me. Hexed is actually a really good film, I got the dvd a while back and I will gladly repurchase and make a combo out of it (the dvd has a commentary among other things). Mary Reilly is a wife's favorite, and I don't think she'll mind the upgrade if its cheap enough. I love the variety too. All genres are getting some love.

Just received the Anatomy double feature in the mail from Amazon.

Anatomy? The English dub has a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. The original German soundtrack? Dolby Digital 5.1 at 384 kbps.

Anatomy 2? The original German soundtrack receives DTS-HD MA 5.1, but also has burnt-in English subtitles.

The one Mill Creek double feature I actually purchase and it's a fuckshow. I reached out to Mill Creek as their original press materials said both films would receive German DTS-HD MA 5.1 tracks, but the packaging does mention German being only in Dolby Digital 5.1. :(

Received a response from Mill Creek.

Sony provided them all of the materials for their Blu-ray and DVD releases and that's all they have to work with. Unless there's a defect with the release, they have no plans to issue another release of the films anytime soon.

While I can live without the bonus materials (both Anatomy films were special edition releases) and the fact Anatomy 2 has burnt-in subtitles, it sucks that one film gets a lossless soundtrack and the other doesn't.

Come on, doesn't Oscar winner Stefan Ruzowitzky deserve better? ;)

Those complaining about Mill Creek should check out MR. SARDONICUS and SHIP OF FOOLS. Excellent transfers, and each has a second feature attached. If this series continues, I am first in line.

I worked on streaming files for these films years ago, but I seem to remember that we found it a little odd that the master for Anatomy was English with no subtitles, while Anatomy 2 was German with burned in subtitles. (I can't remember if were using SD or HD masters...)

I believe both of these titles were acquisitions, so I don't believe Sony can really do much.

If Mill Creek would pair up Hudson Hawk with Color of Night, I'd buy that as a Bruce Willis guilty pleasure double-bill. But I have no interest in owning Hollywood Homicide or Playing God, which they are (respectively) stuck with now.

Nope, both films were financed by Sony.

I was just double checking... Never realized there was a German specific division of Columbia/Tri-Star. They only produced eight films, and it's probably no coincidence that the last film was 2005 when the German film tax laws changed. Film investors in Germany used to be able to write off the production 100% on their tax balance sheets...

And that children is the reason why we have been exposed to the hack known as Uwe Boll.

That still could be the problem though. Who knows how well they archive their stuff over there. (The German division only released 8 films...) Plus it doesn't help that combined world wide grosses are less than $5,000,000.

They're pretty much DTV titles.

Anatomy was originally supposed to receive a wide theatrical release in the US with the English dub to ride the slasher wave at the time, but after Godzilla 2000 bombed and was panned for being sent to theaters with a dub, Sony scrapped all plans. It received an eight theater () release right before Halloween and then was sent to DVD a few months later.

While Anatomy 2 received a theatrical release elsewhere in the world, it went direct-to-video in North America.

The burned-in subtitles doesn't bother me on the sequel as much as the original lacks the lossless German audio.

Anyone seen the Wave 3 releases at their local $5 WalMart bin? I remember snapping up COLOR OF NIGHT, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, and LILLITH when they were first released and available for $5 each...

Looks like the TV on DVD deal is a bunch of re-hashes (according to TVshowsonDVD); I would not expect much more on the film front.

Pick up those Sony titles before they're stripped to bare bones.

Sony Pictures must be closer to bankruptcy. I wonder which studio will be able to buy out their catalog at this point...

I personally would like releases of films that haven't seen a Blu-ray release yet rather than bare-bones double-feature sets of films that have already seen a Blu-ray release.

Agreed, if one cares about quality the original releases will almost always be a better option than these Mill Creek-licensed versions.

Is this just b/c of supplemental materials or will they be mastering these from scratch (I doubt that). If the video/audio quality is the same, I wouldn't mind picking up some titles on the cheap sans extras.

If Mill Creek is stripping out bonus features, they may also be re-encoding the digital compression, and they don't have a good track record for that.

Mill Creek doesn't always source their transfers for Sony's properties from Sony itself. Some are definitely sourced from other vendors. Which is why waiting for the cheaper Mill Creek versions is a gamble.

I'm pretty sure Twilight Time's license is for three years, so that won't be possible until late 2014.

I didn't say anytime soon, but just the fact that Mill Creek and Sony are doing this, I'm wondering now if that holy grail known as the Fright Night blu ray will see the light of day in another blu release. Is that how long TT's license is for on those releases? I had no idea.

It would be pretty great if the OOP Showa Godzilla films released by Sony were put back in print by Mill Creek, especially so if released on Blu-Ray.

Donnie Brasco.
Last Action Hero.
The Legend Of Billie Jean.

Edit: Also found out Anaconda, Flatliners, and Gridiron Gang are getting releases too.

All single releases. All out July 22nd, 2014. All but The Legend of Billie Jean have seen Blu-ray releases already.

Geez, thanks Sony.

Original post has been updated with the new releases as well with more titles that Mill Creek has possession to. Hint: it's mostly shit.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned but many of Mill Creek's Blu-rays are being put on extreme sale at Supercenter Walmarts. An entire display of Mill Creek double features for $2.96.

And all of their Blu-ray releases next week will only contain lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1 tracks only despite lossless options on the past discs.

Anaconda is another title given to Mill Creek. Only $5.19 on Amazon, but it also lacks the 5.1 TrueHD track. I managed to find the Sony version at Barnes and Noble for $9.99.
