The sensational limited and numbered 3-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition will feature the film both on Blu-ray and DVD, and includes an all new hi-definition documentary, and special collectible memorabilia.

Sooo...would that be the same old documentary, just in hi-def, or totally new?

The back of the single-disc edition shows a feature labeled as so: "ALL-NEW Singin' in the Rain: Raining on a New Generation Documentary." Is it safe to assume that this is the "all new hi-definition documentary" mentioned above?

Unfortunately, WB seem to have abandoned poster art for their Blu-rays - compare the DVD and Blu-ray covers for Maltese Falcon, Sierra Madre, Meet Me in St. Louis, etc.

The UK version has a nice poster art cover. And you get a DVD version as well as the Blu ray version.

(It's also region free. Although I would think that the DVD version would probably be a PAL version although I could be wrong on that.)

The DVD would be R2 and since it's a UK release and not Japanese then I would assume it's in PAL.

I'm guessing a lot of us already have one or two copies of the movie on DVD anyway

I hope the 5.1 mix is good, because the original mono is only in Dolby Digital in English.

Fathom Event satellite transmission - yuck... no thanks. sad since the TCM Film Festival projected a 4K DCP of the film.

Re: Singin' in the Rain - 7/17/12

Is it not worth attending then? I assumed it would be a digital projection, as I didn't see anything about a satellite transmission. Do they look lousy? I don't get to the theater too often...

The Fathom satellite transmission broadcasts that I have seen in theaters have all struck me as dark and low resolution.

... and they usually project them with the pre-show advertisement projector, not the digital cinema projector.

Re: Singin' in the Rain - 7/17/12

I've never seen this in a theatre, and my sister would have enjoyed it too, but since it's WB I figured it would be a Fathom feed. Not worth the $11.50 the only theatre that's showing it near me is charging.

Re: Singin' in the Rain - 7/17/12

I got news from a friend that the Fathom screening he was supposed to see at Regal Potomac Stadium 16 got cancelled, very odd, since other theaters seem to keep the screening as planned.

It's just for the experience of seeing it in theaters, nothing more. When I saw The Boondock Saints back in 2010 I thought it looked kind of lousy. The only reason I went is because it never plays at retro-screenings and I thought it'd be a fun experience.

I personally wouldn't recommend any of the Fathom Events, but that's just me.

"the film's inherent softness can be prohibitive"

I always love it when the aesthetic qualities of the film itself are used to qualitatively comment on the video transfer.

True. It's not a problem if it's faithful to the way the original film looked.

For more perspective, anyone who's not aware of the history of this film's elements should take a look at Mr. Harris's commentary below. Given what is stated here, it's amazing this disc apparently looks as good as it does.

Re: Singin' in the Rain - 7/17/12

That really sucks. I'm tired of having to buy these collector's sets just for that extra disc (and a bunch of other crap). I really want the 2 discs (don't care about a DVD copy of it) but I don't have the money to spend on a $75+ set!
