Amazon Instant Video Finally Arrives on the PS3

Finally, finally, finally. Been waiting months for this to occur. The announcement is on the main Amazon page.

Their setup is still a little clunky compared to Netflix, but Amazon's selection is growing fast. I think Amazon's deep pockets and Red Box's cheap rentals will eventually put Netflix out of business or be acquired by another company.

The streaming is pretty good on my Panasonic BD player, but I have no doubt it'll play much better on the PS3. If I rent new releases, I usually use Amazon's service. I'm too lazy to use Red Box.

They have a loooong way to go before they can start to compare with Netflix. I have prime and Netflix. If people think the instant streaming stuff at Netflix is awful, Prime is even worse in video/audio quality as well as selection.

Redbox has been slowly raising their rates and I expect another price raise within the next year or two since they don't have Blockbuster as a competition.

None of this means I'm not going to go home and hook this up though

Thanks for posting about it because otherwise I would have missed it.

Fixed

I'd prefer Xbox because my connection is better than the PS3 but this is a positive step.

Roku on both of my TVs has allowed me to use this for years...

Still prefer Netflix just because even with all their content their organization makes it IMPOSSIBLE to browse titles. Amazon runs some killer $0.99 rental deals occasionally though.

To be fair, Netflix has had a few years to perfect their service. But Amazon's library has been growing very fast. And as I mentioned before, they have the money to handle the rising licensing fees. I don't know how long Netflix will be able to operate when they have to renew their deals. They've already lost or are losing the Starz content and Disney.

Amazon will improve and I strongly believe they'll be the major streaming service in the future.

It's decent on my Panasonic, but that player obviously pales in comparison to the power that the PS3 has. I have Prime loaded up on my PS3 now and the interface on it is definitely improved over what I saw on the Panny.

In my experience with it, once it loads the feature in HD, there's no buffering. It's a steady stream. Even with 30mbps, I sometimes get resolution changes with Netflix.

Amazon needs to allow for a queue, but I'm sure they'll feature one eventually. I just think it's a superb deal to pay $79 for the 2-day shipping + free streaming. I'd much rather pay up front that way.

Just tried it on my PS3. I'm glad I have an avenue to watch Amazon Prime on a television, but...

due to the fact it's 720p.

Prime members get unlimited instant streaming of these titles and 17,000 more. If you're already a Prime member, just register your PlayStation 3 and start watching now. If not, start your one-month free trial of Amazon Prime today.
hey Amazon how bout including the disclaimer ... unless you've had a free trial of Prime before

by the way why does it appear that even if you have Prime you have to pay for any of the recent high profile content

Yeah, I can't imagine why Amazon wouldn't want people stringing free months of Prime together ad infinitum.

I renewed my prime at a student rate of $39. I think that's cheaper than Netflix.

Not everything is free to watch with Prime. Most of the new and good stuff isn't free.

I'm impressed with the video quality. Much better than on Google TV.

Netflix's streaming only plan is $8/month + tax. So at least $96 per year. $79 for Amazon Prime streaming and free 2-day shipping is a great deal.

Re: Amazon Instant Video Finally Arrives on the PS3

Streaming seems to be better than Netflix, and they appear to have about the same selection of movies and shows as Netflix too. Only advantage Netflix has now is that I can stream it on my iPad, but I may still drop it and stick with Crackle / HBOGo on that platform.

Re: Amazon Instant Video Finally Arrives on the PS3

I tried it last night and the PS3 interface is a lot better than what's on the Panasonic. It operates pretty smoothly, but they could still refine some areas. Their HD stream is more stable than Netflix. But that could be due to less customers using their service. But hopefully it means it's more due to the setup on Amazon's end.

With a 30 mbps internet plan, I don't like seeing resolution fluctuate when I'm streaming Netflix. Amazon has always been consistent.

I've liked the version that my Panasonic TV gets, but I've had weird glitches with it - like some seasons of TV shows have no audio. The UK Office plays fine on my computer, but on my TV there's no sound. Yet most other TV shows and movies have been fine. It's odd. I hope it hits Xbox, too. It would be nice having one more option.
