I woke up this morning to an e-mail from Screen Archives offering details on pre-ordering The Fury and Christine. The time the e-mail was received? 11:42pm...30 minutes after it sold out. :lol:

When is The Blob coming up for order? I'll definitely nab it but I doubt it'll sell out as fast as Christine.

Didn't I read somewhere that TT didn't care about horror flicks? If so, you'd think after the success of Fright Night, Night of the Living Dead and now Christine they'd start taking a bigger interest.

The highest Christine has sold for since it came out for pre-order yesterday has been $60.99 by searching completed auctions (not active - no guarantee they will actually sell for that price). Highest bid for an active listing is $65.

I listed Adam Sandler's smash hit "Jack and Jill" for $120... doesn't mean people are buying it for that price.

At $60.99, there is not much profit in it.

Christine did have a limit of 10 per order/buyer at first.About 1200/1300 copies were gone in about 30 minutes.I guess SAE seen the scalpers buying these up at a crazy fast rate.
So they reduce the limit to 3 then to 2 within the first hour.
Or it would have most likely sold out in under 2 hours.


The Fury had about 1000 pre-ordered yesterday.

The Blob (1988) release date has been push back to 2014.

Just curious, (and this may have been asked and answered before) but why such a small production number? There is obviously a market to sell more than 3000 copies. I understand if the studio doesn't want to mass produce five hundred thousand copies but where is the profit of just contracting out 3000 copies at 30 bucks each? Why not sell 50 thousand copies at $15 each (or even less) and still make much more money?

I just don't get the math of some of these releases. I understand it maybe with a niche title that has a small cult following. But The Blob, Christine, Fright Night, etc.? These movies would all sell more than the 1000 to 3000 limit. Color me confused.

It's a set number that the main studio has with Twilight Time in only licensing a certain number of discs. The contract says 3,000 and that's all they have to authority to sell.

At $30 a pop times 3,000 = $90,000. This doesn't even include shipping. Sony obviously does not have faith that this particular title or any of their licensed to twilight time titles will recoup those costs if they were massed produced by them.

I anticipated this would probably happen, and I credit this thread with reminding me when this would open for pre-order. I managed to order both Christine and The Fury. I kind of figured the precedent of high Ebay prices for Fright Night and NOTLD 1990 would create a lot of speculative buying. I don’t anticipate as big a response for The Blob, but I’ll be sure to pre-order when it comes available. Does TT get these titles as a worldwide exclusive or could Sony license BD releases of these titles in foreign markets? I could see Christine being a title that could garner a German or UK release.

They get the rights for the North American market (although they do release them as region free).

The Egyptian has been released overseas, however, it's from an older master with the wrong aspect ratio.

Sony plans on releasing As Good As It Gets, The Blue Lagoon and Steel Magnolias themselves in Germany, however it's not known yet if they will be region locked.

Still makes no sense to me when the studio could make more money for the reasons I gave in my original post. For known titles such as these, they could sell more copies at a smaller price and still make much more money.

After the licensing fees, manufacturing/production costs, etc., the gross of $90K hardly seems worth the trouble. I'm not sure why even Twilight Time does it.

At this point I think the Twilight Time horror releases are a hot ticket item no matter what movie it is. Horror collectors will pay high prices that most people won't. This is why we don't see As Good As It Gets selling out fast or going for $100 on ebay despite it being a very well known and liked movie. This is similar to how Mondo screenprints blew up in the last few years and sell out instantly. The Blob will sell out just as fast as Christine. Horror fans collect and will pay for it.

I'm thinking that it's a time constraint. How long will Sony wait until they see that initial $$ recouped? Twilight Time has already made the money in 24 hours. It's a win/win for them when it come to titles like this. Their sell rate is 100%.
