No Country for Old Men (CE) ...2 versions?
Just wondering if there are two of the same versions of the CE Blu and one is just a re-release as the 1st is considerably more money but hardly available. the 2nd is readily available, looks like the 1st and half the price.

There is also the Canadian Alliance Home Video version in a Steelbook case which has all the same features as the Miramax version.

If you want the digital copy, don't buy the Disney one since it expired 2 years ago. I don't know about the Lionsgate one.

The Lionsgate 2-disc version, which is identical to the old Miramax version, is available for $19+ on Amazon.
Of course, the 1-disc version is only $5.

So I ordered it and watched it last night. Worst transfer I've ever seen on a blu-ray. Most DVD's look better than that. Macroblocking and compression artifacts. I've never seen compression artifacts on a blu. Major bummer. I guess I should have read more reviews.

That is the original 2008 release, I watched the version released in 2009 that includes a digital copy. I imagine the transfers are the same or, if anything, the 2009 would be superior. All the reviews I've read call the transfer "reference quality" but on my 84" projector I could see macroblocking compression in the darkest blacks (which there are a lot of). This is something that I've never seen on a blu-ray. Pretty far from reference quality.
Reference quality discs in my opinion:
Baraka
Episode III
Iron Man
The Thin Red Line
Sweet Smell of Success

No Country for Old Men is one of the best live action transfers I've seen. DVD Talk, HD Digest, AVS, HTF, and Blu-ray.com all gave the video very high scores. I don't think I've read anyone else criticize the transfer.

Yeah I just watched this on Thursday night (the original release but I assume it's the same transfer) and it looked really good on my set.

The scene that was the worst offender was when Brolin goes back to give the guy the water. That night scene was very dark and I saw tons of macroblocking in the blackest areas. If anyone wants to check their copy I'd be interested.

That's really strange. The only thing I can figure, if it IS the same transfer, is that it could have gotten higher marks in a different "era." Some of the early discs that were highly praised may not hold up so well now. However, NCFOM was a new release, which have generally looked fine. Catalog titles are the ones that have been hit or miss.
I haven't sat down and watched my copy of the original release in a while, but I just skimmed it (including dark scenes) and it looks good to me. It seems like something must be wrong if it's the worst HD transfer you've seen. I know damned well it isn't the worst I've seen. Have you seen Elf, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Truman Show, Mission: Impossible 2, the original release of The French Connection, or the re-release of Predator? Those are just a few of the bad ones that come to mind.
Do you have the means to look at the disc in a computer? On my copy of the original release, the .mt2s file of the movie is 26.6GB as reported by Windows. That's going to be a bit larger than the re-release because the original has the soundtrack in PCM whereas the re-release has it packed as a DTS-HD MA track.

Re: No Country for Old Men (CE) ...2 versions?
I have not seen any of those but I'm aware they are flawed. I don't have a way to view it on a computer unfortunately. I tend to agree with your "different era" theory. All the glowing reviews were written in 2008-2009 and I am always doubtful of the set ups that many reviewers use. I think that at 84" there are flaws that can be seen that don't show up at 42".
