All Quiet on the Western Front - 2/14/2012

Copied from Blu-ray.com:

In February, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will bring All Quiet on the Western Front to Blu-ray. Based on the classic novel by Erich Maria Remarque, director Lewis Milestone's drama follows a young German soldier (Lew Ayres, Damien: Omen II) through the horrors of World War I.

One of the most acclaimed anti-war sagas ever made, All Quiet on the Western Front won two Academy Awards - Best Picture and Best Director.

Newly restored from the original film negative, Universal's Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack presents the film in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio with 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio. The disc also contains a number of bonus features, such as:
Introduction by Turner Classic Movies host and film historian Robert Osborne
Two 100 Years of Universal featurettes:
- Restoring the Classics
- Academy Award Winners

surprised they're not releasing the newly restored "silent version" that aired recently on TCM as a bonus, which is basically the same movie just without the talking and title cards where the dialogue would be.

I hope this is the beginning of Universal turning around their catalog output and doing it right.

You must have overlooked the initial post.

Re: All Quiet on the Western Front - 2/14/2012

Has anyone seen it yet?

I got it this week, and it looks amazing! Fabulous job cleaning the film up--it almost looks like it could have been made in 1960 rather than 1930. A gazillion times better than any previous home video release of the film.

The silent version is quite a surprise! It's not necessarily better than the talkie, but a fascinating alternate take. It does feature alternate frames of some of the same scenes, and even a few scenes that were cut from the talkie. The music score is not all that amazing. I guess I'm spoiled by the mostly stark talkie version. I think it plays better that way.

Yes, I love this film, and the restoration job was amazing. It looks phenomenal for such an old film.
