Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I pulled the trigger and bought the 65-inch LED. Already got it hooked up, and after doing some calibration, I'm very pleased. Not sure about the remote, but I'll program it in my Harmony later tonight.
Last question for all of you (probably): what do you have for your 3D settings? My Samsung didn't offer much of any customization so unsure what to mess with among all of these options. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I keep the depth set at 0, so that if it's showing a 2D image with a 3D signal then it's in straight 2D, and any 3D separation you see is intentional. Some people have tweaked it a bit to compensate for weaker 3D in some movies, but I prefer to see everything as it is.
I still haven't had time to play with the Blu-Ray player's TV size setting to see what difference that makes if any; I just have it set for my TV's size (which I'll have to change when the new one comes! :) ) Sure hope LG notices this spike in TV sales; I intend to send them a letter after mine comes and is set up. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Heads up, Fox Connect has a 3D sale going on now. It looks like 18 movies for $9.99 each. Ends 1/31.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I have all of those already, except for Predator and I Robot since those are conversions that weren't even re-released in theaters. The Ice Age Christmas special is only 22 minutes long, I think I only paid $6 or so from it from FoxConnect a couple years ago.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Even if they weren't released in theaters in 3D, especially older movies, if the conversion gets good reviews, I'll get it. Titanic had a fairly good coversion. But both Predator and I Robot had only a few minor pop-out moments. Not really sure I would have gotten them now.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
lack of 3D support for future tv's makes me kinda sad. i will upgrade one day, but what the hell am i gonna do with my now 100+ collection? they'll be useless and i really love having them and viewing them...

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Watch the 2D discs until then. My guess is that they won't 100% disappear, but they will be hard to find except for some lesser brands out there. But it'll return in 3-5 years.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I hope so. I can't watch a 2D movie if I have the 3D counterpart. That would be a crime against the medium!
|
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I was like that, and as many 3D's I have, they don't get regular play. I'll usually watch 3D only on the weekends, and when I do, it's only a couple. Rest of the time, I don't mind watching the 2D even though I have it as part of a 3D set.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Thanks for the heads-up...I may grab a few! But am I the only person who visits foxconnect.com and finds somebody else's shopping cart visible on the page? Either that or they're trying to move some titles that are overstocked?
Edit: is this the 3-disk BD (3D + extended BD, + theatrical BD with extras): https://www.foxconnect.com/the-wolverine-3d.html ? Too many versions of this film! Edit #2: Nevermind, figured it out. Only the black case version has the extended cut. |

Amazon is having some sort of sale on 3D titles at the moment--here are some of the films that have been marked down:
Pompeii - $4.99 300: Rise of an Empire - $7.99 Jack the Giant Slayer - $9.88 Dial M for Murder - $9.99 Oz the Great and Powerful - $10.95 There are others, but these seemed to me to be the best bargains. |

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Well, this LG news has netted them the sale of a new TV- the 3D on my Sharp TV was never all that great and I was always planning on replacing it, though I would've preferred not to until after I moved however long that might take. Faced with the possibility of not being able to GET another 3D TV again I wasn't going to take that chance, just got shipping confirmation today. Even if 3D disc releases stop I've got several hundred still to watch.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
That's the amusing part, there is no sign of 3D releases slowing down. No more TV's for now, but the 3D releases are still coming in on a constant basis.

3D is also still big for movies in theaters, although a lot more are now post-production converts instead of actually being filmed in 3D. So since they already have a 3D version around, including it in a higher-priced Blu-ray release is an incremental cost. If 3D Blu-ray disc sales fall off a cliff, I could see certain releases dropping the 3D version. |

I was a little surprised to see that Trolls didn't have a 3D release.

I hope the 3D on Doctor Strange is stellar. Looking forward to revisiting... |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Being a bit cynical I might suspect that the forthcoming releases were already in the works before the announcement of TVs stopping. I certainly HOPE I'm wrong about that, I'm going to keep buying them now more than ever just to show my support! Bob Furmanek at 3D Film Archive says he doesn't plan on slowing down his work there as long as people are still buying.

Assassin's Creed 3D is currently $19.99 at Target and Amazon

For passive sets, have any of you seen any performance differences with different brands of glasses? I'm looking to buy a couple more pairs but wasn't sure if there was something in particular I should look for.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VGT654Y/ Also, I got these clip-ons for my wife to use with her glasses. I haven't used them myself, but she likes them: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0151255I8/ Also, if you ever go see a RealD 3D movie in the theaters, you could just take those glasses home with you ;) What you don't want to do is get glasses that say they're for IMAX 3D. IMAX 3D uses linear polarization, while RealD and all passive 3D TVs use circular polarization. |
