Great flick, havn't seen it since I bought the original DVD on release week. Defintely worth the upgrade after all these years. Gotta love when director's cuts and new features makes douple-dipping worth it.

You have to deal with returns if you wait longer than that, though. After Friday or Saturday they've charged your order and started the shipping process but they still guarantee the price through Tuesday. Just last week everyone got $18 refunds for the price drop on the last "Twilight Zone" Blu.

Best Buy has this now. The .com site says they got it on 9/4. The online price is $14.99, so not as good of a deal as Amazon. I was in a store today and they had 4 or 5 copies on the shelf.

There appears to be some changes to the color schemes involving some scenes (as is the norm with Del Toro's other films)- here, there's quite a bit of golden/amber hued and blue saturated scenes. Furthermore, the film has been absolutely drenched in darkness- mostly to a fault. I would also go as far as to say that the picture quality is very disappointing- there are large amounts of grain in many scenes and detail is shaky at best. I watched the "Blood Simple" Blu-Ray shortly after that and the experience made the "Mimic" BR look that much worse- the Coen Bros film, from 1985, is also a dark film by nature yet looks 10 times better as far as clarity and detail is concerned. It blows the "Mimic" BR, a film made in 1997, out of the water.

Been ages since I saw it, but I always remember it being murky.

Yes, very much so. I'll wait for a couple of reviews and screenshots. Considering this is a Lionsgate release, I'm sure it will be $6.99 eventually, so if the reviews are negative I might cancel my $9.49 pre-order and wait for the lower price-point. It would have been nice if they had included the original ending as a deleted scene. I still don't understand how this can be the director's cut if the ending he preferred wasn't restored, unless it was in lousy condition.

For a $2.50 price difference? This is the kind of thinking I don't get...unless money is truly an issue (in which case you shouldn't even consider buying it in the first place, or even be using your time or have the capability of using the internet to post here), I bet there's a hundred ways you could save that money in a week. I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude, but debating over $2.50... I don't get it.

Wow great price!! I love this film very fun to watch. This film also makes great use of the Dolby digital channels, sound effects panning all around.

I've debated over less than that, as I'm sure many here have - there have been several titles I've been interested in that I wouldn't buy for $10.99, but would for $9.99. I own so many DVDs and Blu-rays that I'm at the point where I only add titles once they reach a certain price point, otherwise I can't really justify their purchase. For instance, I would never spend more than $9.99 for almost any non boutique-label (BU, Synapse, Criterion) release, and would only spend less than that for a release with inferior A/V quality or a dearth of extras.

Exactly. It's not the amount so much as it's a mental price point you're set on. It's why something sells at "under $20", when it's actually $19.99. People see it as a better deal, even if the difference is negligible.

As far as a Director's Cut of this goes, I'm going to have to wait until more reviews come in, but for now it doesn't sound like they made enough changes from the theatrical release for me to care too much about it. -kd5-

If it's true the original ending isn't on this, then I've lost all interest.
And the film was always overly dark. I remember being annoyed by this in the theater. Even in her office/lab in the beginning it's ridiculously dark.

Didn't see this at my local BB. Either could have sold out or they didn't have them out.
They had a couple copies of Trainspotting out, which I guess is also a timed exclusive?

I hadn't seen the film in a long time but apparently there are a number of alterations. Dimension added "shock cuts" and fake jump scares in post and those have been taken out, in addition to several new scenes being put back in. The ending is the same as the theatrical version because it's the one that Del Toro wanted all along. Someone who knows the film inside and out can tell us all the differences but Del Toro is adamant the film is now the way he wanted it, without some second-unit footage that was shot without his participation.
The transfer is excellent -- whoever said the movie was "drenched in darkness" couldn't be more wrong. If anything the brightness levels were pumped up for this release (maybe a bit too high for my liking) because it's a lot easier to see what's going on in the movie now. The alternate ending (which I read someone on IMDB claim wasn't even on the disc!) is in the extras, though it's actually a little bit different than the one I saw in an earlier workprint in terms of sound editing and such.
Overall I would highly recommend this release if you like the movie or are a fan of Del Toro's work!
