The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
So they are screening The Rocketeer at the El Capitan in Hollywood on Tuesday for it's 20th Anniversary. Billy Campbell, Director Joe Johnston, Rick Baker and other guests for a Q&A and hosted by Kevin Smith. It says it's an all new digital print. It's great to see Joe Johnston involved since his relationship with Disney hasn't been rosey. Add in the new digital print as well as a bunch of behind the scenes extras they are showing with the screening and this suddenly sounds like a special edition blu-ray on the way! Thoughts?

Fuck yes.

re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
That's what some of us are hoping.
We'll know for sure Wednesday, I suppose. |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
I'd hope Disney wouldn't do all this and NOT give us a BD.

However, I'm not likely to ever repeat it. I would only recommend the El Capitan for real Disney diehards who want to experience an old theater, not only in all it's restored, gilded glory the way your grandparents (or probably great-grandparents) did, but with all the comfort they did as well. Like sitting in seats barely big enough to hold an adult with no cup holders and armrests so thin you can't put your elbows on them if the person next to is already doing so, and you have to sit with your arms straight down at your sides (which is a very uncomfortable way to sit, even for a skinny guy like me), with rows of seats so close together it's almost impossible for anyone to get by you to get to their seat, never mind not stepping on your toes. However (and my memory may not be correct on this point) this may have been because the seats don't flip up. But, aside from all that, the seats themselves just weren't very comfortable. While I've been to some old theaters in my day (and my day goes back long before modern style theater seating was anyone's idea) and in different parts of the U.S., the El Capitan really takes the prize for the worst movie theater seating I can ever recall. And I can remember seeing Jailhouse Rock and the Giant Claw in an old, Kentucky second-run theater in the '50s. |

Its a new digital print, but it was not a full on HD restroration.
unfortunately no bluray for The Rocketeer is comming in the near future. I got to sit in on the soundcall,(technical runthrough) this morning. Honestly after watching that I would have much prefered that they had used a nice 35 mm film print. It had about the same PQ as the recent Dick Tracy screening featuring a a new digital print as well. |

Well that's disappointing! As much as I want to go for the Q&A tomorrow, I might pass based on this new information. Thanks for letting us know. Also I have to say I'm disappointed in the "new" merchandise they put out. Almost all of it it just a re-hash of the 1991 merchandise and just adding the words 20th Anniversary underneath. This film deserves better, especially when you are bring so many of the original peeps together for this thing.

Crow if I were you, I would say hold off on wait for the Aero or Egyptian to run it in the future, where when they show it again(and they have in the past) it will cost you 11 bucks not 50.00 that D23 is charging. I will say this its going to be super cool driving past Hollywood Blvd tomorrow night and seeing the Rocketeer on the Marquee. The Rocketeer was the first movie to premiere and Open at The El Cap when Disney took over and reopened it 20 years ago. Iam not watching the movie again tomorrow night (since i got to sit in on the run through , on it the other morningbut I am going to sit in on the Q&A following the movie, so I'll post what is said durring that when i get a chance. would have loved it though if disney had simply delivered the wrong Digital file, and what i saw the other day was not what was suppose to be seen tomorrow. (that actually happened a few months ago for the Fantasia screening as part of TCM disney delivered a digital file that was at a much lower resolution, than what they were suppose to be playing it at, as a result they had to scramble at the last minute to have the correct file sent over and delivered to the theatre in time.) |

As much as I'd love to go tomorrow night, $50 is a little too expensive. I thought about it when it was first announced but Kevin Smith hosting tipped me into the NO category. |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Why exactly is Kevin Smith hosting this thing ? He had nothing to do with neither Disney nor The Rocketeer.

re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Yeah I've decided to skip it. I was going to have to shift my work schedule around to go and it just wasn't worth it at this point. When I called last week though, they said they Q&A was before the screening. Can you give me a true run down of what the schedule is? Definitely report back about what you hear at the Q&A!! That's what I was most interested in. Thanks!
BTW Kevin Smith, fan or no fan of that guy, if you have never sat in on a panel that he has moderated or just been a part of, he's pretty damn funny. I think this Q&A is going to be a hoot. |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
I changed my mind, I'm going. Today is my birthday so what the hell! 20 years ago today on my birthday I was doing the same thing except in Connecticut. This will be cool either way.
I'm not a member of D23 but they have general admission tix. Hey Amity, any chance you could get me the special gift they are giving out to the D23 members?? :))))) I could pick it up tonight :) |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th

He is a comic book afficinado(sp), (The rocketeer is based on a comic book series/strip) He had a relationship with disney when Disney owned Miramax and plus he has moderated other screenings of Disney screenings held at the El cap in the past. And he lives right around the corner, like 3 mins from the theatre lol

re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Hi guys, I took some photos from the event and posted them on my Facebook. It was a lot of fun and a great turnout. I got to meet "Tiny Ron" who played Lothar in the film and I also got to meet Dave Stevens mom and sister who came down for the screening.
Re Blu-Ray: The guy running the D23 event mentioned "while we are all waiting for the blu-ray" but moderator Kevin Smith never asked Joe Johnston when we could expect it and I got the impression it wasn't even in the works at this point, which is a bummer. Kevin was not on his game tonight despite saying he was a HUGE FAN of the movie. He messed up several facts regarding the movie and gushing like a nerd at times about things not related to The Rocketeer. I think he asked Billy Campbell 2 questions and Rick Baker got a couple questions, though he admitted he was cringing at the results of the Lothar makeup when he watched the film thinking they were bad. I remember in 1991 thinking they were bad! He said he wasn't involved in applying the makeup, just the general design and I guess it showed. Overall I found the panel very short and disappointing though Kevin did have a few funny lines. The panel started really late which shortened the panel considerably. They played the new Captain American trailer after the panel (I guess this new trailer premieres Thursday for the rest of the world) The prop exhibit was really nice. They gave The Rocketeer the entire 4th floor of the Hollywood Museum. Now there weren't a ton to props and costumes, but what they had was cool. It was nice that it's wasn't shoved in a corner somewhere though. I was told the Gee Bee plane would have a permanent residence at the museum, not sure about the rest. I picked up a 20th anniversary poster and a newly designed Bulldog Cafe t-shirt. They also gave out a souvenir program with a dedication to Dave Stevens on the back. The D23 freebie was a Rocketeer patch I believe which was no big deal. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...5&l=11e0eb138d |

It was funny seeing him out in front of the theatre Helmet in one hand chomping down on a cigar. I managed to get my Rocketeer poster and soundtrack insert signed by Bill Campbell, Tiny Ron, Paul Sorvino(eddie Valentine), max grodenchik, and Rick Baker,(i allready had it signed by Joe Johnston at another event we hosted at work while back.) I found it odd they really didnt make much mention of any of the rocketeer alumn that were sitting in the audience. And I got a photo with Bill as well. And the captain america trailer was the one they also played durring the Iron Man Q&A with jon Faverau and Robert Downey jr at hero complex at the chinese theatre 2 weeks ago. |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Paul Sorvino was there? They made no mention of him. That is insulting, I'm sure he was pissed. They did mention Tiny Ron though ... wtf. I didn't see Thomas Jane. Because I was General Admission I had to sit in the upper balcony and couldn't see anything other than the stage.
That's cool you got the stuff signed. Baker, Stout, the writers and Tiny Ron came over to the museum afterwards but I didn't see Johnston or Billy. I was hoping to get a photo with Billy. Oh well. Going to the museum and seeing all the props and costumes plus running into some friends was the highlight of the evening for me. Overall it was well worth it. |
re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
You would think that Disney, having though The Rocketeer was popular enough to host this event, would want to get the movie out on blu-ray in time to market with Captain America. Since they are the same director, and can be pretty sure that Captain America will be a success (at least, financially), it's the perfect time to release it. And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have to worry about any copyrights using the Captain America name since they own Marvel.
