I haven't seen this film since 1992 or so, but I've had the soundtrack album (being the Horner nut that I am) for years and love it completely.
Be nice to revisit this film with fresh eyes. A excellent soundtrack Album, but quite a bit of Horners score never made the Soundtrack cd |

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
I, of course, would love all sorts of extras to be on the blu-ray. But with Rocketeer being one of my favourite movies of all time, if the blu-ray only had the movie in anamorphic widescreen and with a trailer, I'd be happy. Do you think this means that Disney will put out The Three Musketeers anytime soon ? That would look really good on blu-ray.

DVD Beaver review
Looks like a somewhat underwhelming presentation - a single-layer disc with no extras? |

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Did they accidentally leave all the special features on an unreleased standard edition?

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Still, it's better then the non-anamorphic dvd.

Like it was said above...I'm surprised we're getting this at all with how poorly most catalog titles sell. |

They're giving us the trailer but I can't believe they're leaving off the 23-minute "Rocketeer-Excitement in the Air" feature from 1991. It would have been something for the Blu-ray, at least. It was done by Disney so there shouldn't be any copyright issues. What about deleted scenes, other trailers, a retrospective doc, and the recent anniversary event? Any of these could have went on the Blu-ray. The film does have a strong cult following. At the least, that 23-minute feature should have been on here. Here it is for anyone that hasn't seen it:

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
That's the problem with most Home Video departments to the big studios. The people that worked there 3,5,15 years ago don't work there anymore.
They don't know/care about vintage promo items, and won't take the time to look for them. They only focus on new features, the funding for new features isn't there for a catalog title like this. All it would take is around a week of work to find the tapes with vintage promos and transfer to digital. Everyone would be happy with that. Strange that they spent the money for 20th anniversary premiere and didn't bother to document it or anything. Given the potential tie in with Capt. America Disney really fumbled this release. A comic book movie from the director of a recent hit? Put a sticker on the cover that says "From the director of Capt America!". Yes, it's sure to be better than the shitty 1992 laserdisc port we got on dvd. But with no features and a single layer Blu, I won't pay more than 9.99 for it. Asking $20 for this is too much. |

I agree but it's really shitty when we're just happy that a quality catalog movie is released on Blu-ray. Really shitty.

I totally agree. But then I realize it could have been an MOD. At the very least it's a bluray. The copy I currently own is a German import because it was in widescreen. I get sad when i think of all their full-screen releases. Hey Disney hire me to help run your home video department. At least I truly care about your product.

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
This movie has been virtually unwatchable to me for the last 20 years.
The LD had some odd sepia/golden haze added to the image that I never recalled in the theatrical showings. Rather than evoking nostalgia, this just made everything seem dreary and dingy. With such an unattractive image, this never got any play. Hope came with DVD, but those were dashed when they merely recycled the LD master. By this time, I'd stepped up to much better displays, so the non anamorphic status was a double whammy. From what I heard, the non R1 anamorphic disc still retained the dingy pic and added PAL speed up. No thanks. This release is going to be the first time I can actually sit back and enjoy the film in 20 years. That's well worth the trade off of a few bonus features I would enjoy but likely only watch once. B&N is having a 40% off sale on Bds just before Christmas, so that with a member discount and possibly a coupon is going to work just fine for me as far as price. Looking forward to finally seeing this again. That said, the caps do seem to indicate that some of that golden haze is still retained here, though thankfully not as oppressively as in the past. It could be faulty memory, but my impressions of my theatrical viewings were that the blue skies, for one example, were actually a nice bright blue- like they are seen in various trailers and TV spots. The films palate already favored browns, and earth tones in the sets and costumes, so there was no need to artificially lay anything else over that. |

Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
I actually don't want this movie all sparkling and clean. The dirt and murkiness, for me anyways, adds to the nostalgic charm of the movie. Like with the Doctor Who dvds. I like that they went to the trouble of cleaning up the episodes. But I wouldn't mind a little "VHS haze", though. It sort of reminds me that I'm watching something old. It's weird, but it makes me enjoy the show/movie a little more. Like I said, it's "nostalgic charm." The Fraggle Rock dvds and the commercials that are included with various tv shows on dvd are perfect examples of this. I hope I explained it well. It's hard to put into words.

Movie is lots of fun.
A real throw back to the old movie cliffhanger days. |
Re: The Rocketeer finally coming to Blu-Ray - December 13th
Well I really wanted to get this but no extras means I am no longer interested.
