Wow.

I actually saw both Mr. Wrong and Holy Man in theaters.

... how do they get a Blu-ray release before a thousand other titles deserving of one is beyond me.

My excitement never rises above a barely-registered blip when these guys announce anything.

I didn't see that disc. I'd imagine it's poor, but is it at least marginally better than DVD?

Yea, its definitely rough to say the least. I will give them credit for releasing them at all since there isn't a huge market for SW. They're decent movies and the blu ray case doesn't take up as much room as a dvd case would have so it was an okay $5 spent.

I'll probably be okay with my BU dvd of Keoma (which I love) over a Mill Creek blu unless they pull a miracle.

Ha, I bought Mr. Wrong on laserdisc just because I thought it had no chance of ever being released on DVD! Will have to watch it again soon and decide if it's worth the 5 bucks for the Blu-Ray upgrade (from what I remember, it was hardly worth buying on LD. The concept was good but it just really fell apart fast.) There's a few other titles on there I'll pick up.

I remember Buena Vista releasing it as one of their first bargain DVDs in which everything just reused their original LD transfers. Except Mr. Wrong which got a brand new anamorphic transfer.

In my mind, Mr. Wrong is the reason why Ellen DeGeneres is a lesbian.

Wow, I haven't thought about Terminal Velocity in years. I was watching this in the VHS days and almost fell off my chair when I saw a guy I knew in high school playing a supporting role. He was a big debater in school, and went on to act in some movies and TV but mostly did writing (Tonight Show and ESPYs, according to the usual online sources).

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

Rights update for the following (DVD triple features listed on their site). No BD releases for them yet but most should make an appearance before the end of the year it would seem.

A little troubling that 2.0 audio tracks and the wrong aspect ratio is listed for some of them. Hopefully those are either erroneous tech specs again or the BD releases won't duplicate those mistakes.

Big Trouble (2002)
Billy Bathgate (1991)
Blaze (1989)
Color of Night (1994)
Crew, The (2000)
Deceived (1991)
Doctor, The (1991)
Father Hood (1993)
First Do No Harm (1997)
Green Card (1990)
Hello Again (1987)
Hope Springs (2003)
Kazaam (1996)
Life with Mikey (1993)
Mr. Destiny (1990)
Mumford (1999)
Oscar (1991)
Playing God (1997)
Prefontaine (1997)
Rich Man's Wife, The (1996)
Roommates (1995)
Simple Twist of Fate, A (1994)
Spaced Invaders (1990)
Stella (1990)
Summer of Sam (1999)
Taking Care of Business (1990)
Two Much (1996)
Unstrung Heroes (1995)

Nothing of interest, although I did kinda like Spaced Invaders as a kid.

With that announcement, I think everyone should prepare to add Kazaam to their collections.

I'm upset this isn't seeing a Criterion release.

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

I also noticed Mill Creek got the rights to Nixon and Swing Vote.

It looks like Swing Vote is already OOP based upon availability. I would assume we might see these getting Mill Creek releases in the future too.

I was surprised to see some of the titles on that list; I didn't realize they'd changed hands.

I like Nixon and have the Hollywood Pictures BD already. I wouldn't mind seeing Billy Bathgate come to BD also.

Have any of the mill creek sets carried over previous dvd/blu extra features?

None of the releases Mill Creek have carried over even had prior DVD bonus materials. However, Mill Creek carried over all of the DVD bonus material for the Gamera set and their recent release of the first season of That '70s Show.

The Camp Nowhere DVD had nothing on it. The Blu-ray is practically just the same, just now in 1080p and carrying DTS audio.

I wonder if Color of Night will be the director's cut?

At Mill Creek prices, I'm in for most. Some due to cast (like Blaze and Billy Bathgate which I remember being mostly meh but still worth revisiting). Some just for some lazy day entertainment as I find a number of them appealing with that in mind.

A handful that I thought were pretty good films/genre films (Mumford, The Doctor, Summer of Sam, Big Trouble, Green Card, Mr. Destiny, A Simple Twist of Fate, Oscar, Taking Care of Business, Unstrung Heroes).

Nice to see Terminal Velocity in that mix. That's a fun show. It's such a polished production that it seemed unlikely it was written for Charlie Sheen. I still watch the ending on occasion for kicks.

In terms of the Touchstone Pictures catalog:
  • Splash
  • My Science Project
  • Adventures in Babysitting
  • Can't Buy Me Love
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit
  • Dick Tracy
  • 3 Ninjas
  • Alive
  • My Boyfriend's Back
  • Cabin Boy
  • It's Pat (I'm sorry, I have no taste.)
  • Ed Wood
  • Phenomenon
  • Jane Austen's Mafia!
  • Big Trouble
Hollywood Pictures:
  • Encino Man
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • In The Army Now
  • Quiz Show
  • Houseguest
  • Powder
  • Mr. Holland's Opus
  • Grosse Pointe Blank
  • Simon Birch
Yes, some of these have already been announced for release by Buena Vista for sometime later this year. However, there's some titles in there (like Super Mario Bros.) that would probably sell a shitload more units than all of the titles Mill Creek is putting out.

However, looking back, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures has never been known for quality product.

Seriously? Matthew, are you drinking? Look, I enjoy Super Mario Bros. for the flim that it is, pretty much a big budget disaster, but it is definately going to fall into the Mill Creek tier of sales.

If Mill Creek put out Super Mario Bros. tomorrow and it was at Fry's or Best Buy or whatever retailer for $5.99, everyone I know with a Blu-ray player would purchase it because:
  1. Nostalgia warps any perception one has.
  2. It's cheap enough that our nostalgia would make us purchase it.
All my friends and I bought Camp Nowhere and the Ernest films because of that (unfortunate) reason alone.

Super Mario Bros. would move more titles than fucking Mr. Wrong... and that's coming from someone who saw Mr. Wrong during its original theatrical release.
