Re: Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker
Yeah, admittedly, I'd certainly pick Mask Of The Phantasm over Return Of The Joker if I had my choice...

I don't mind saying this was a pleasant surprise to read! I still haven't seen much of the series, but I'm on the lookout for a good deal on the recently released complete series box set. Even if I never get around to that, though, it'll be nice to have this in its proper aspect ratio and in HD. Fun stuff!

My head just exploded. Full Frame?! What I was hoping to hear is that the movie was finally getting an anamorphic wide-screen presentation. I hope that was a typo/error. I want this in 1:78:1 or I doubt I'll be willing to make this an upgrade.

No sale.
I swear, sometimes the studios make it so easy for me to not buy more discs that will sit on my shelves and gather dust.

Maybe when it is $7.99 in a year or two, but I just watched the DVD a month ago and it was fine.
Really do love the movie, it is a very logical progression for Batman and all of his "Friends".

I have no idea. All I know is the 'Director's Cut' was supposedly intended for 1:78:1 and that is why it was released on DVD that way. It was also shown in select theaters back when it originally came out. I wasn't able to attend a screening though, so I cannot comment on which aspect ratio it was shown in theatrically.

So... any idea what the animators originally intended?
And I would KILL to get Mask of Phantasm in high definition!

Same situation as the Justice League Season 1 Blu-ray. The storyboards were animated for 1.78 yet the episodes were 1.33.

Re: Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker
Return of the Joker was animated in 1.33:1 and the widescreen version was cropped. Whether or not it's supposed to be cropped is up for debate I guess.
I'm surprised we're getting this on Blu-ray before Mask of the Phantasm but Batman Beyond has been getting a big push lately. They just released the complete series boxset, the series is re-airing on the Hub, and DC is publishing a new comic book which I think might be the catalyst for all this.

Re: Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker
You are right about it being animated in 1.33:1, but just like the Justice League animated series, it was intended for and framed for 1.78.1 Widescreen.

Re: Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker
My memory is pretty fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure the storyboards and stuff they showed in the behind-the-scenes footage had 1.78:1 defined within the square-ish boxes. When they were sketching everything out, they definitely knew where it'd fall in widescreen.
