Lord of the Rings Extended Edition out in 2011
I hope this is true. Guess we'll see soon enough. Via thedigitalbits.com
What's more, our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson's long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an "ultimate" box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks.

I wish they had put both cuts together via seamless branching, because I prefer the theatrical cuts of Fellowship and ROTK.

Omitted part of the article...
"they've confirmed that Warner Home Video IS going to be releasing Lolita and Barry Lyndon on Blu-ray this Spring (here in the States and elsewhere) as part of a larger Kubrick promotion."

Other than that, mostly some ropey CG action stuff in Two Towers and Return of the King that haven't aged well, and some Gollum stuff in those movies could use some improving as well imo. Considering what WETA are capable of now, I dont think it would require a huge budget or anything.

I hope they finally make a brand new digital intermediate for FOTR. Although it looks decent, it pales in comparison to the HD quality of TTT and ROTK.

The most obvious shot that needs to be redone is the one at the beginning of ROTK where Smeagol gets pulled along by the fish, leading him to the Ring. It's probably the worst effects shot in the whole trilogy.

With blu-ray, maybe the EEs will all be on one disc this time. The only version I care to see is the normal editions, but I'd like to hear the commentaries on the EEs.....though Peter Jackson is extremely boring. Kind of like John Hughes on the Ferris Bueller commentary or Tim Burton on the commentary for Edward Scissorhands.

Could be because it's not Smeagol that gets pulled by the fish.
