Question about 3D blu-rays.
Sometime next year (probably later rather than sooner) I plan on picking up a 3D television. I plan on buying the 3D version of Piranha 3D when it comes out in January and was wondering if the picture, without the 3D TV/glasses would be blurry like it is in theaters or if it will just look normal? This may be a stupid question but thanks in advance for any answers.

Re: Question about 3D blu-rays.
Assuming you have a 3D compatible player, doesn't the TV also have to be compatible? I know some releases come with the 2D version so that might play fine (I learned about this with Resident Evil: Afterlife) but I'm not sure about 3D only movies. But I don't have a 3D player or TV so I can't be sure.
And as my teachers always claimed, there's no such thing as stupid questions, there may be dumb answers, however.

Re: Question about 3D blu-rays.
The new Blu-ray 3D spec that the Blu-ray 3D players and 3D HDTVs use is backwards-compatible with the original Blu-ray spec.
The 3D image is stored as 2 separate images (1 for each eye) per frame in the MVC (Multiview Video Coding) codec, which is backwards-compatible with AVC. 2D-only Blu-ray players only see and display the first image for each frame, ignoring the extra info that pertains to the second image.

So you can buy the 3D Blu-ray of Piranha 3D, and you should be able to view it on your current Blu-ray player and HDTV as if it was a normal 2D Blu-ray.

Some titles have a single 2D/3D compatible disc. Others have separate 2D and 3D discs in the same case. And others still may be 3D only.
You need to check this on a title-by-title basis.

However, there is a separate 2D-only Blu-ray that contains additional special features, due to the additional space gained when dropping the 3D version from the disc.
Note that while, technically speaking, all 3D Blu-ray discs could be played in 2D on a 2D Blu-ray player, I've recently learned that some titles specifically disable this functionality. One title, FIFA Wold Cup 2010 3D, was 3D only due to licensing issues (another company had 2D rights). Some titles may offer the 2D on a separate disc. This may be to avoid consumer confusion. It also may be due to certain 3D artifacts, such as the use of Dynamic Floating Windows in the 3D version, which would be distracting in the 2D version:

Re: Question about 3D blu-rays.
Saw some comparison screens somewhere of the Monster House 3D disc and the 2D version was different than the original release. (background was not out of focus for example)
