I'll trust that if SK cut it, it doesn't belong

Amazing stuff. Although I have a hunch that if this footage does see the light of day, it will be presented separately as deleted scenes. I read quite a few times that Kubrick thought it was boring, and was perfectly happy with it cut out.

This would be a quad dip for me, as I already own the 1st Warner release, the 2nd remastering, and the HD-DVD. I haven't gotten rid of the 1st Warner yet, because it has a classic interview with Arthur C. Clarke, which I don't believe was carried over to any other editions. And I can't get rid of my Kubrick set yet, because Barry Lyndon and Lolita aren't yet in High Def.

If Kubrick was the one to cut it then it belongs outside of the film. There's a reason why this film is as loved as it is all these years later.

On another note, I don't really see the point to a re-release on Blu-ray just so that people can see deleted footage Kubrick didn't want us to see at all.

Curious to see the extra footage but probably not enough to buy again.

Though they have been confirmed for 2011. If the new release of 2001 has additional extras as well as the deleted footage, which I assume it will, I'll probably buy it. Counting VHS, this would be the 5th time I've purchased the film, but it's one I never get tired of.

interesting find...I'm sure it won't get inserted cuz if SK cut it...it wasn't worth having in the film. BUT...I'd like to see wtf he did cut out.

A re-release with a new transfer is one thing; a recycling with some new extras tacked on is another, IMO.

Same here. but there's no need at all to change what Kubrick perfected. Additional deleted scenes are fine as a supplement, but don't alter the movie.

My understanding has always been that the movie premiered with this longer cut and was trimmed down before wider release. As such, I could buy an argument that the longer version is a "real" cut of the movie and could be justified as a release version. They just need to include both cuts, either branched or on separate discs or, ideally, the way the Alien Anthology release handles the Aliens 'Special Edition' footage: you can watch either cut of the movie or you can watch the added scenes as extras.

I'm intrigued by new footage but apprehensive over the content. What if it's 17 more minutes of "going through the star gate" footage?

I believe this new release would be the original Roadshow Picture release - a longer version that played in selected theatre back in its original run.

So this doesnt necessarily mean Kubrick cut the footage. The Roadshow edition could have been the actual Director's Cut and what we have is the version the studio forced to be shorter...

So I can't wait to get my hands on this! I hope the transfer is also improved.

Glad I didnt get the BR yet....so this won't be a double-dip for me.

That would be my fear also. I found that sequence tedious in 1968, and still do (and I believe that it WAS longer way back then). I think it was intended to be viewed when high or something.

Nah, it's mainly excised dialogue. Specifically, the famous cut "bargaining" scene.

Honestly, Dave, I believe you are effectively throwing away a considerable asset.

I'd be happy to do your taxes, Dave... Dave?

Bowman
I'm not interested in that, HAL.

HAL 9000
Please, Dave... just consider for a moment how efficiently I could organize your stamp collection.

In his Great Movies article on 2001, Roger Ebert (who was at the first LA screening that showed the 17 minute longer version) said the cut footage included "a pod sequence that essentially repeated another one". Doesn't exactly speak to the quality of the deleted scenes, but it could be interesting as a bonus feature, I guess.

I thought the transfer on the blu-ray was exceptional. What was wrong with it?

I don't think there's really anything 'wrong' with it, but it could be improved if re-done today using the better equipment, software and methods that have been developed since that transfer was performed. It's very good, but it could definitely be even better.

Interesting read. Rock Hudson storming out of the theater.

Would love to see this additional footage

Like most others, I'm curious to see the footage but I agree that it shouldn't be integrated back into the film. You just don't mess with Stanley's movies.

Supermallet 12-15-10 01:29 PM

Re: Extended cut of 2001 may be coming soon!

AFAIK, Kubrick screened this cut at the premiere, discovered audiences found it boring, and subsequently cut the footage. I don't believe it ever ran that way in any kind of wide release. I'd like to see the footage, but it shouldn't be re-integrated into the film. 2001 is the best film ever made as it is now.
