Re: Dances with Wolves: 20th Anniversary - 1/11/11
For those wondering what the added footage is. This website finally did a huge comparison between the two. It's a long read though:)

http://movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=1186797 Though it must be said: that site has the worst name...I mean, they must not really understand the actual definition of the word "censorship", as different cuts of a film does not in any way, shape, or form mean they have been "censored", but whatever.... |

Thanks for the link...I've wanted to read a detailed breakdown between the cuts like that site does for awhile now....

The original site name is Schnittberichte.com, and I put that through a translator online and it showed up as "Cut Reports" which makes more sense. Or even calling it "alternate versions" is another good name for the site, since it doesn't deal with simply ratings cuts to films. But,it's still cool and interesting to see extensive comparisons between different versions of films, since I certainly don't have time to notice if a few frames are missing from a scene or not(nor would I notice). |

Ridiculous that the Theatrical Version is a DVD exclusive and the Extended Version is a Blu-ray exclusive. Congratulations, Fox. You successfully fucked over both formats with one movie release. Well done.

The extended version has already been available on DVD for YEARS now, hardly a "BD format exclusive".....while BD owners who prefer the theatrical cut might have a right to complain, how exactly did Fox screw over DVD owners on this one? |

I just meant with this upcoming release. I guess I didn't think about previous releases.

Don't get me wrong, the length of a movie in itself is neither a good thing, nor a bad thing. If it takes 4 hours, 5 hours, or 6 hours to tell the story, so be it. The problem comes when there is an internationally lauded film that's received numerous awards for its content and its editing (no small task, to be sure), that is intentionally held back in favor of a revised cut.
I'm all in favor of Directors', Extended, Expanded, re-imagined, or whatever cuts that surface after the initial release. Many of these are recognized to be better than the original, while others are not. The point is, these should be supplemental or complementary to the original vision. See Blade Runner for a template on how to release a film for home viewing. |

Did anyone check this out yet on blu? I plan to pick it up soon, but I was wondering what people thought of the PQ.

Just finished it. It's awesome. Picture is awesome. Sound is awesome. Movie is still awesome after 20 (!) years.

A definite upgrade from the DVD. Picture is beautiful although the night scenes seem a bit muddled or soft. Only if you really pay attention to it would it possibly become an issue. The sound is damn impressive. Well worth getting if you like the movie.

DVDTalk review. How does a BD that gets pretty much 5 stars across the board only yield a "Highly Recommended"? Shouldn't it be "DVD Talk Collector's Series? I've always been curious how they come up with these.
