Re: Rocky Horror Picture Show Bluray
You know it's funny because this kind of thing comes up where I work. There is more of an emphasis on having predetermined testing scripts so we can report percentages complete and such. Problem is this leaves no room for creative testing. We used to do testing based on the experience and savvy of subject matter experts who knew exactly what to look for and were just as effective and usually more so than the current crop and their script technique.
It's kind of the same with these releases. These QC people might be great at turning up technical glitches (sometimes
) but when it comes to content problems it's almost as if the studio isn't even interested in accuracy.

^ Sad, but true. Your average consumer will still say, "Wow, it looked sooooo awesome!", regardless of what might actually be on the disc.

There are also video issues. The blue filter that was used over the scenes in "Brad's room" and the red filter used in "Janet's room" have been removed. Sounds like Fox's QC department blows. I hope they fix this, but won't be holding my breath. Guess I'll be holding onto my DVD copy too.

I do have to ask, what are the other audio options? Is there a way to hear this in stereo or mono with the correct take from Janet?

Well, there is that at least. Not that it excuses the screw up, but at least you can hear the original audio without problems.

Jesus Christ, I wish someone would tell Target (and get them to listen) that they are ruining product by placing the fucking spider-alarm-thingies on them. They crush the fuck out of anything they are wrapped around.
Yes, I'm pissed about it. I tried to tell them that when I was an employee there, but do you think anyone there cares about product quality? Fuck no, they don't.

A friend of mine does Blu-ray QC for a living and even did some work on Rocky Horror. Unless someone happens to be a huge fan of the movie in question, the chances of them catching errors in content (without another source to compare it to) is virtually nil. And besides, they're not paid to track down if each shot has the right filters applied or if the vocal takes are accurate to the master. They're paid to see if the disc doesn't work when inserted into a player, or if you get the subtitle menu when you click on special features, etc.
And even if you are a huge fan of the film being worked on, you may never even get to watch the movie in its native audio, because a big part of QC is testing the alternative language tracks, and it's a whole team working on each title, not one person.

And the filters won't bother me that much, I was more worried about the sound goof. Glad to hear that at least the mono track isn't affected. Still didn't get a chance to listen yet, but I'm going to try again tonight.

I was watching this last night. Very interesting audio mix with the instruments and sound effects separated in the front and rears. The issue with the wrong Janet track isn't as bad as someone made it out to be. There's one note that's different and the sync issue is also on the DVD. I think it's was more jarring because of the new mix: some vocals are more prominent so it stands out more. As was noted, there's always the original mono track.
While the loss of the audience participation audio track sucks (gonna keep my DVD), there is the addition of the Shadowcast in a window at the bottom right of the screen. For those that have not seen it in the theater with a Shadowcast present, this is a real treat. The audtions "doc" was interesting but tended to focus on the better tryouts. I would've liked to have seen some of the worst

Yeah but do you guys remember the participation track that was on the DVD, it was awful. I wish they would bring the one that was realized on CD back in the day and sync that one up.

You mean replace the audio? I don't think so. Aside from Cabin Fever, I don't think a studio has ever 'fixed' a disc like with the problem Rocky Horror has. Plus, BD-Live has become pretty much a joke. Does any studio actually use it for anything besides Trailers? Even Disney has dropped all their Online 'features' and just moved them to the disc (or just not present at all).

Yea, it was not a very high-quality track. IIRC, it was sourced from the 1983 LP, and was muddled, and had a lot of folks adding in their own stuff that wasn't part of the "official" callback cannon.

It always seemed to me the best stuff was of course going to be strictly local in jokes with only a handful of material being nation wide (barring the props).
I wish more we could get an audience track specifically close captioned so you can actually hear/read all the stuff people are yelling. I've never been able to understand everything that's said in that track.
Then again, most of the time I could never understand what they were yelling when I actually went to one of the shows either. :-)

How much is actually in the "official" callback canon anyway?

It is mostly clear, everyone is in-sync with one another and all canon.

And it would have to be a 7.1 Lossless track...so were talking a good 1-2GB File (vs a much smaller Commentary track).

Not if it was just replacing a portion of the audio. It's wishful thinking, but would be nice if it could happen, since a new disc is probably out of the question.

I tried listening to this (on DVD) again a couple of nights ago and turned it off almost immediately. I couldn't make out anything that was being said/yelled.

Yeah, the audio mix-up isn't horrible, but it definitely sounds like they used an entirely different take for the first 3rd of the song for everyone. Ah well. Rest of the movie looked and sounded great.
