yeah blu-ray will continue to grow. It doesn't change the fact that DVD will still be king for quite awhile to come.
Most people still prefer DVD to Blu, simply for lack of knowledge about the format, price, and extra players to buy.

I still prefer dvds to blu, and I have a full new 50 inch 1080p plasma with ps3 etc etc.

Why? lets see, I can buy a typical title on blu ray for 10-25 bucks. Usually that same title can be had for 1-5 bucks on dvd. With the upconverting of the ps3, I just don't see enough of a difference with most pictures that would make them worthy of spending that much more. The more blu's drop in price, the more I will pay attention.
I have about 100 or so blu, but about 2500 dvds and will not update most of them.

do you have your set up properly callabrated cause there is a pretty big difference in picture quality on most titles. as for buying a player there are low priced models currently out there that are expected to be in the 49.99 range this holiday season, dvd players dont last forever you know so why wouldnt someone who is in the market for a new bluray player upgrade to bluray when the machines and movies are quite affordable now.

Yeah, I'm sure they're just trying to emphasize higher-margin products, but the doorbuster angle might be lost. i guess they're figuring carrying the major new releases will do the job.

They might still get some occasional shipments of catalog titles for events like Black Friday. Maybe it makes sense to have blowout sales of $2 discs at certain times, but it's not profitable to have them at $5-10 taking up floor space every day.

Geez, my local Best Buy looks like it's paring down Blu-rays. The DVD selection is still quite plentiful, but the BD one is absolutely paltry. I think the late Circuit City had better inventory.

I guess if I had that many I wouldn't be thrilled about switching either. Ever consider downsizing the collection? I did that on a much smaller scale about five yrs ago. I was approaching 500 dvd's and I knew Blu-Ray was coming up, so I stopped buying, traded in over the following couple yrs and now sit at 300+ blus and 40 or so dvd's. Of course, folks are kinda stuck now since dvd value dropped so much.

I wouldnt go so far as to say that Circuit City had mroe titles, but my local best buy looks nothing like what teh article in the OP describes. Granted, last tiem I was there they had moved soem stuff around, but DVD was still taking up at least 4 times the space that Blue Ray was. This is the way it has been for the last several months anyway.

DVD is being inexorable over-hauled by Blu ray. That's going to continue and probably accelerate so I don't think shops will continue to allocate the same space to DVD they have in the past. It seems pretty clear over here in Britain that BD sections have grown just as DVD sections have shrunk. This is borne out by the sales figures which are now pretty healthy for BD it would seem.

The DVD will last much longer than VHS did after the latter was phased out. By the time DVD becomes extinct, you'll see Blu-ray being relegated to the bargain bins, after it becomes superseded by something better. That's the way with everything.
