Re: David Lynch Foreign Releases

Just checked the "other" forum and saw the new Mulholland Dr. was encoded by David Mackenzie. That pretty much makes it an automatic buy.

He's that good! (I mean, not to the point of buying movies I'm not interested in just because he worked on 'em or anything, but he is kind of a miracle worker.)

This disc had the best audio/video, but it was a limited edition and is now sold out. UK and French Blu-rays have the same video, but a mastering error in the audio that causes dialogue to come out of all three front speakers. Some viewers find this more noticeable/distracting than others. (It echoes a little bit.)

Be careful if ordering from the UK. Some copies are encoded at 1080i/50Hz, and it's not easy to tell from retailer listings which is which. All of them are locked to Region B.

The French Blu-ray is also locked to Region B. It also changes all on-screen text to French.

Honestly, the Twilight Time copy was the best all-around disc. Hopefully, MGM will license the movie out to another distributor when Twilight Time's exclusivity license expires.
I guess there's nowhere to obtain the TT version for a reasonable price huh

Doesn't look like it. Honestly, unless you're really hankerin' to rewatch the movie right away, a little patience will probably pay off. Several former Twilight Time exclusives have wound up being reissued by other distributors once the TT contract expires. It wouldn't surprise me to see this come out from a label like Kino (which has a new edition of Thunderbirds Are Go coming out soon that looks like it will be identical to the TT disc).

Also keep in mind that when I say the TT disc had the best audio/video, the video is still kind of mediocre. None of the Blu-ray copies of Wild at Heart look great.

I've never seen it, so I'm hankerin' for a first watch haha. Do you happen to know if this copy from Germany would look/sound ok or if it would even work in a Region A player?

Nope. He's just the only one who I know of that actively participates online and his work speaks for itself.

I should import Lost Highway so it will guarantee a Criterion announcement soon after.

Lost Highway is a guarantee that it will be Criterion bound. Just be patient.

Would you settle for a DVD in this case? It's one of Lynch's weakest movies. It would seem a shame to spend a lot of money on it.

As far as I'm aware, all of the European Blu-rays of this movie that were distributed by Universal are locked to Region B. MGM owns the movie in the United States and Universal owns it overseas, which is why each studio region-locks its discs.

Universal has been using the same video master that Twilight Time did (supplied by MGM). The video should be basically the same, unless on-screen text was replaced with a foreign translation (which is what happened in France). All of Universal's discs have the audio authoring error with dialogue coming from too many speakers. Whatever caused that is specific to Universal. Neither the MGM DVD nor the Twilight Time Blu-ray have that problem.

Re: David Lynch Foreign Releases

My blu-ray copy of Wild at Heart, bought in Australia, and has a Universal logo on it, is Region A/B/C.
It doesn't seem to be available anymore, though, looking at JB Hifi (where I bought it) and other online retailers.

Re: David Lynch Foreign Releases

Not a foreign release, but this seems to be the default thread for David Lynch films. Maybe this deserves its own thread

Wild At Heart [Collector's Edition] + Exclusive Poster
Released: May 22, 2018 • Available in US & Canada
Product SKU: 826663179378

Details of special features are not yet confirmed, but it's good to see that this is getting re-released.
