Wishful thinking: it's higher because it's 2 discs.
It's Warner, they'll be using the VC-1 codec, and I would genuinely be surprised if the disc takes more than 40GB of space up. |

No it's not. The DVD is two-discs, the Blu-ray will be one-disc.

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Figures. I recently picked up the dvd as a blind buy for dirty cheap. Now I am trying to decide if I want to even bother watching it or just trade up for the bluray.

I was a little bummed that this isn't about Once Upon a Time in the West, which is very high on my all-time list.

Anyway, I've never seen this. Contemplated buying it a couple times, but I always held off. I know that's quite a bit of content (just under 4 hours, plus the bonus features)... should this all fit on one 50GB disc without a problem? Makes me kind of nervous. I think it would be better to have the full film on one disc, and then the bonus features on another.

Looks like its a decent upgrade of the DVD and best of all, it's all of one disc, so no more intermission.
I'm in for it. |

I'm in for it. The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 occasionally buries dialogue in the back channels, using spatial and directional designs to give the conversations a complex, ambient feel. By the midpoint of the movie however, the lack of clear discussions between the characters can be unnerving |
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
I cancelled my order...just wasn't worth it.

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
you guys do realise that the dvd version had the exact same sound and video issues, therefore the issues stem from the source.
But the blu ray screengrabs at beaver do show that the visual issues are less prominent on the blu ray. |
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Unfortunately....I didn't know that at the time...but I also didn't pay full price for it. I bought the DVD for cheap at amazon..like..2 years ago I think.
|
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
fair enough, my point was that if you didnt notice the issues on the dvd, you are probably unlikely to notice them on the blu ray and it will still be the best way to watch the film.
|
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
unfortunately....you're probably right.....FUCK...

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
The picture quality is pretty impressive. Much better than I was expecting. I hadn't seen this film since the mid-90's. I will say it's not holding up very well for me. Still a classic. But I've always hated the score. And I like Ennio Morricone.
|
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Damn....I love the score. ESPECIALLY when the kids are shown but specifically one moment...you know...THAT moment where one kid runs.

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Already long, but nevertheless engrossing, Once Upon a Time in America is getting restored and having 40 extra minutes added. Wonder what THAT film will look like on blu-ray down the road.

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
That's awesome news, and what people have been hoping for for a very long time. I'm excited.

Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Interesting news. The movie as it stands is pretty damn long, but I'm still curious to see what else is there.
Probably too early to know, but does an English language track exist for the extra 40 minutes, or will it have to switch back and forth between English and subtitled Italian for the English language release like some Italian films with Director's/Extended Cuts do? |
Re: Once Upon A Time in America - 1/11/11
Very interested to hear this. This is a great film, and I love all four hours of it. I'd be willing to see if I can love four and a half.
