Image Ent. / Sony deal - Spike Jonze' Adaptation may be on the way
From http://www.homemediamagazine.com/stu...tainment-20439 :
In a major coup, resurgent Image Entertainment Aug. 30 said it has inked a multiyear deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to allow the studio to manufacture and distribute all of its Blu-ray Disc and DVD releases. Separately, Sony agreed to license an undisclosed number of titles to Image for distribution.
Classic titles in the agreement include Sydney Pollack’s Absence of Malice (with Paul Newman and Sally Field), And Justice for All (directed by Norman Jewison and starring Al Pacino), and Adaptation (directed by Spike Jonze, with Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper).
Sony Corp. subsidiary Sony DADC is a major Blu-ray Disc/DVD replication company.
In addition, the deal affords Chatsworth, Calif.-based Image, which has slowly re-emerged from near bankruptcy to near profitability under new ownership and management, access to SPHE’s traditional accounts and non-traditional distribution channels.
“This agreement allows us to take advantage of their state-of-the-art retail systems while retaining control of sales and marketing,” said Image CEO Ted Green. “It also gives us additional quality product to distribute.”

Could this mean Taxi Driver will be getting a Criterion Blu-ray release, complete with isolated score?

Well we know that Sony is working with Criterion so maybe Image will let some of these go to Criterion. But then again look at the blu's they released from Handmade Films, most of those were at one time part of the collection and I would have thought that Criterion would have released some of those on Blu if they had the chance.

It sounds like it's kind of a swap where Sony gets to distribute Image's (existing) titles, while at the same time, Sony licenses some of their titles to Image. What I can't tell is whether Sony distributes everything, or just the existing Image library.

At least some of that Special Edition (advertised on PALM's The Work of Director Spike Jonze) had been completed. My friend Matthew Lingo asked Susan Orlean years back what was up and she said she recorded commentary for her deleted scene (or perhaps the entire movie, I don't know which).
There are also some extras on foreign releases that didn't appear on the US DVD.

Still, I just checked criterionforum.org and some members are stating that this Sony/Image agreement will funnel the films straight to Criterion since Image is shifting their company more towards marketing and sales and will let Criterion distribute and release some of this titles.

It might not have mattered. I don't see any indication that Sony would have anything to do with the transfer, authoring, etc. It sounds like Sony might just be handling the manufacture and distribution of Image's titles. Image could have turned in the same disc masters, lackluster transfers and all, with the only difference in the finished products being Sony labels on the discs and cases.
