Annoying network icon displays using LG BD390 player

I have an LG BD390 Blu-ray player and while watching Blu-ray discs or streaming Netflix content, periodically, the network icon appears on the upper right of the television display briefly in color and then switching to gray-scale, before finally going away again in about 4 seconds.

I find this really distracting when watching a movie and would like to know how to disable this and what purpose it serves.

Is it connected directly to the router? I only see it when I first turn it on for 5 seconds.
