Friday Night Lights (TV series) - 9/26/17
You can watch the shows in HD on NBC but you can't get any of the seasons on Blu-ray.
Anyone know if Universal will eventually release them on Blu-ray and would it be wise to avoid buying the standard def dvds currently on the market?

Of course there's no Blu-ray release; the show isn't exactly a juggernaut. NBC/Universal hasn't thrown many shows out onto BD yet (just The Office, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica (with House being released soon)). I don't see a release coming anytime soon. 2012 at the earliest and that's being optimistic.

...yeah. This won't be happening. It took how long for House, one of Universal's biggest shows to get a BD release? Don't count on it. Ever.

Even shows that are big ratings hits don't sell well on Blu-ray. Friday Night Lights is a very good show, but its ratings have never been stellar. (It only got renewed for the current season due to the split-distribution deal with DirecTV.) I wouldn't expect this to be released on Blu-ray.

Maybe in 10 years if Blu becomes the new standard... but right now treat it as you would Laserdisc circa 1992 when looking at releases. Big name titles and big name catalog titles with a handful of studios releasing cult titles [ie: Anchor Bay... Troma... Criterion... Blue Underground]

That's a real shame. Watched seasons 1-3 on Netflix streaming HD (720p). Beautifully shot on super 16mm. It would look sublime on blu. I went ahead and got season 1 on DVD on swapadvd.com. Looks just a notch below the netflix stream upscaled, so i'm fairly happy. It's in the top 5 hour long dramas of the last decade, imo. Right up there with Battlestar, Carnivale, etc...

I doubt will see individual season releases. Maybe a complete series. I'm hoping this and 24 come out at some point in the future and I'll be happy.

Friday Night Lights has no chance of making it to Blu-ray. There are just commercial realities for certain shows, they do not have a big enough fan base to support a Blu-ray release.

I'm glad to have been proven wrong by Mill Creek. I wonder about the economics of their release, licensing must have been dirt cheap.
