UPDATE: Apocalypse Now 2-Disc & 3-Disc (w/ Hearts of Darkness) Announced 10/19/2010
Already mentioned by Mr. Cinema here, but this news certainly deserves it's own thread. From this thread on the Blu-ray.com forums (11 posts down):
Let the arguments over OAR (re)commence!

Just like Lawerence of Arabia they promised in 2006/7 that was coming soon? Lol. I'll wait for a real release besides speculation from people who have been wrong before.

EDIT: So the DP chopped the sides for a 2:1 aspect ratio or opened the mattes (assuming this was shot on Super 35)?

I'm cautious about this....This is my Fav Coppola film...I seriously hope he doesn't fuck it up.

I'm not interested in the Redux anyway. The added scenes ruin the momentum of the film.

Only Redux? Seems silly to do just one version, especially the less famous version fewer people have watched. Either way, if it's not OAR, then I can wait. I picked up the Dossier packaging for cheap a few years ago.

He created the "Univision" film system, which is a 35mm format based on film stock with three perforation that provides an aspect ratio of 2:1, which Storaro feels is a good compromise between the 2.35:1 and 1.85:1 wide-screen ratios favored by most filmmakers. Storaro developed the new technology with the intention of 2:1 becoming the universal aspect ratio for both movies and television in the digital age. He first shot the television mini-series "Dune" with the Univision system.
Apparently the man who had balls enough to make Apocalyspe Now in the first place is too wimpy to stand up to his former DP.
Or maybe Coppola is like Lucas and Spielberg and doesn't think a little retrofit to a masterpiece is such a bad idea.

And why would Coppola allow it?

I will be very disappointed if the original, and IMO, superior cut is not available on the BD. The recently released Lionsgate DVD is Redux only, so I am concerned.
Coppola is not the only director to sign off on Storaro's alteration of aspect ratios of films he photographed, witness Bertolucci and The Last Emperor (likewise altered from scope to 2:1 on current releases).

Apocalypse Now remains one of my all time favorite movies. While I do enjoy the additional footage Redux brings, I hope they release something similar to the Dossier.

There's no way they'd ignore the original cut - I'm sure they'd make it available via seamless-branching.

I dunno, man. It's Coppola. aka the guy that did The Godfather. I'd think Coppola has a good chunk of control w/ what he did at Paramount. I think it's all him now.

I honestly don't see this as a bad thing. It's a win-win as fans get the titles they want on DVD and Blu-ray alongside Lionsgate having an actual library to work from and put titles out. It also helps that Lionsgate have been usually consistent with the quality of their BD releases and have a better track record than Paramount. Paramount would've never released titles like My Bloody Valentine (uncut), The Phantom, and The Relic amongst others onto BD. My Bloody Valentine and The Relic were released bare bones via Paramount, but the Lionsgate releases actually contain extras (commentaries, featurettes, etc) and solid PQ/AQ.
Hopefully the BD release contains both versions and Hearts of Darkness... but we will see.

I don't think seamless branching is possible on account of technical reasons such as different color timing, etc.
I also doubt we'll get it in OAR. Storaro has been getting his way with "his" movies for quite a while, (see Last Emperor). I honestly don't think we will see these films released properly until after he has shuffled off this mortal coil.
FWIW, I agree that the pacing of redux is too slow....that scene with those French people at the old rubber plantation really drags.

I hated that the Dossier literally split the film into 2 discs...annoying as fuck.
