I'm kind of kicking myself for not realizing that Universal would probably fix The Thing in time for the prequel. I just bought it recently.

Oh, well. Should Gizmo's theorizing become reality, Prince of Darkness and They Live at the same time, please? UK commentaries pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?

Universal doesn't fix anything. I love them, but they don't help fans in any aspect it seems.

And nice extras. As long as this is under $19.99, I'll definitely be picking up, considering I never got the bare bones release. The movie cash always makes the deal better, even though I have zero expectations on the reboot coming out.

My money's on Fox including the old BD and throwing in the DVD w/ special features. Fox sucks.

I'm going to guess they did a new transfer on this using an AVC encode and putting it on a BD50. The set has an audio commentary, so it can't be the old disc.

Nice cover. Makes this purchase even easier.

The Thing will get rereleased when Universal brings out the prequel next year. Maybe it'll have everything the 3 year old HD DVD had this time...and no DNR.

Get the UK release. No DNR (as far as I know) and all the extras.

I just saw screencaps of The Thing BD. It doesn't look particularly DNR'd to me...

Yeah I've only heard good things about "The Thing." Also, I heard that all of the extras from the DVD/HD-DVD are on the set, but they're just there via U-Control, rather than available separately in the extras section. I can't confirm that though.

That's mostly true, but U-Control is such a pain in the ass it's not even worth the effort. I've got the old CE DVD, HD DVD and UK BD. I'm set for a while.

I'm not sure there will be too much improvement given how grungy the film is to begin with. But I have to think a fresh AVC encode on a BD50 will show some benefit vs the old MPEG-2 crammed on a BD25.

Glad I held off on the current Blu-Ray (and the 2-Disc SE, for that matter).

When I started buying Blu-rays I said to myself "no mpeg 2" and "no Dolby Digital only audio tracks" (unless old movie). I have broken down and bought a couple (under $5), but Predator wasn't one of them. I'm also glad I didn't purchase it on dvd. I had a similar rule of not buying a dvd if I had it on Laserdisc (broke that rule also but not too many times).

The Thing's making-of documentary "Terror Takes Shape" is one of the best I've ever seen. It's 80 minutes long and covers everything about the film. It truly sucks that they threw it in their U Control feature. I hope a re-release has the documentary separate.

Luckily, I heard about this before the Blu-Ray was out, so I just hung onto my DVD.

Still, I'd love for a new Blu to fix this.

Since excitement surround Nimrod Antal's Predators is nearing a fever pitch, it only makes sense that 20th Century Fox revisit the original movie that started it all and finally give it the home video treatment it so richly deserves.

That's right, kids! The Predator "Ultimate Hunter Edition" Blu-ray is officially on its way! June 29th to be exact! No word yet on if we'll be getting a new transfer (lord, we hope so), but according to High-Def Digest "the release will be a 2-disc set with over 5 hours of bonus materials including an audio commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, and movie cash to see 'Predators' in theaters this summer."

UPDATE
We have confirmed with the powers that be ... this edition will be coming with a brand new transfer! Thank the video gods!

Then I guess you didn't see this thread. The BD clearly has added DNR that was not present on the HD DVD.

Yes, the UK release retains the extras, but it has the same DNR as the US release.

Interesting.

Noticeable, I guess, but not quite an Elf or Dark City-style tragedy. Still, hopefully they fix it if they do a new disc timed to the prequel.

Except not all of the extras are included. The current BD release took the HD-DVD master and compressed it further and added edge enhancement.

Bring on a proper BD50 re-master!

I just wish Fox did away with the eco cases. I especially hate the 2-discers. Yuck!

Just as long as they don't screw up the LFE and "Digital Restoration" isn't code for DNR, I'm gonna get this.

That's a shame. The HD DVD is reference quality, IMO.

Even after HD DVD is dead, it's still the superior format.
