Due to the cost of the conversion they went through and cut quite a bit.
We actually screened the early cut of the film at work a few times prior to the premiere, you really arent missing much from the stuff cut the good thing about all the cut footage is that you dont have to see great actors such as Danny Houston and Alexander Sidig do there best with horrible dialouge and bad direction.
Were they cut due to unifinished effects? Id think they would be finished if they put the 3D at the last minute...

Seems like an easy "Exclusive unrated edition!" sell for WB

Yeah, that story doesn't quite jive given they went to the extra expense to have Liam Neeson reshoot scenes that originally featured other actors in his stead.

the effects were finished they were cut and the opening of the movie was changed. Originally the whole constilation opening wasnt there, the movie originally opened the same way the original opened with The acretian king throwing Danai into the ocean then it went right into the scene you still see with the coffin being found by the fisherman and his wife.
But because warner bros wanted to have a strong opening 3D sequence to open the film, they chopped up the scene and moved the part where Danai gets thrown into the coffin and tossed into the sea and The Acrietian king being turned into calibus got relagated to latter in the movie and done as a flashback. there was good bit of olympus stuff cut, as well but the real shame isnt that the scenes with the other gods got significantly cut but how poorly the director made use of talented actors in those cut scenes such as danny huston and Alexander Sidig. sure part of its the script but a lot of it is the Direction.

I am actually surprised that they arent having it as a extended cut seeing how the multiple screenings of it done were pretty much the same cut until the 3D converted screenings began.
Hopefully part 2 will turn out better as in my mind the only good thing that came of this clash of the titans, was that we got a bluray release of the classic film.

The expense of bringing back Neeson to reshoot scenes in the film(which most studios usually have written in that the actor can be called back in for reshoots as part of the contract with the actor through their union, and what cost that will be is alot of the time included in the actors original payday)was probably alot cheaper than converting the entire original cut of the film.
Every min of film converted costs about 95,000 dollars and by cutting out about 20 to 30 mins of the film through creative editing and reshooting some scenes in the long run the cost of the conversion was lower than what it would have been if the original running time was left in palce. and with the film not tracking very well, Iam sure Horn and Fellman were not wanting to have WB spening anymore money than they had to incase, the movie ended up tanking.

Well, as if there wasn't enough reasons to despise cheap 3D conversions, now theres another.

Regardless of the content, cutting 20-30 minutes of film simply to save money on a conversion is simply bullshit

Also, funny is that this is the 2nd time in a row that this has happened to a Louis leterrier movie, since Marvel wanted Incredible Cut down as well, and that lost a ton of footage.

Judging by the lackluster bonus features, I bet WB will re-issue this in a DC 6months after 7/27. Ill wait.

I wish they weren't including the alternate ending with this BD release. It dashes my hopes for a release of the alternate cut down the road.

Don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical cut but would love to have the alternate cut as well.

It seems we might still get a DC for CotT.

Director Louis Leterrier Interview CLASH OF THE TITANS

Are there specific things your excited about including on the DVD?

Leterrier: Yeah. I’ll actually work on the DVD stuff in London. There’s tons of stuff. I don’t know what we’ll put on it yet. I want to keep some stuff secret. If there is another cut of the movie that comes out, there’s great stuff. With all of the deleted scenes, there’s great stuff. I’ll put some deleted scenes on it that I know will never end up anywhere, but I want to keep some stuff secret too.
So hopefully the 20+ minutes of deleted scenes won't stand in the way of a DC release.
