I was a bargain hunter with DVD and I am so with BD. I only buy on release date if it's as close to $20 as possible. Though there are some rare exceptions.

I buy a lot of films. If a title is available in both Blu-ray and DVD, I'll buy the Blu-ray 100% of the time. But some new releases are DVD only (such as the Mystery Science Theater 3000 sets or The T.A.M.I. Show). I do spend more time researching before I drop money on a domestic DVD. Titles like Martyrs, Sin Nombre, The Story of Anvil . . . can be found as imports on Blu (region B locked). Even though I prefer Blu, I will buy a regular DVD if it is ONLY available on that format.

Having Crohn's and the money problems that go with it have entirely changed my once-frivolous ways. There was a time, I didn't hesitate to buy whatever even remotely interested me and I wasn't about to put in the effort to research things like promo codes and coupons. These days, even though I can be impetuous and impatient, it's not often anything comes out that I feel I must have it upon release. The few times I've been there to buy something day of release recently, it's because I wanted to get in on a good deal (like this week's release of the Toy Story movies).

I can guarantee you, though, that Lawrence of Arabia will be a day one purchase for me, even if I have to pay list price.

For each DVD that I purchase, I probably buy 15 BDs. If I think a film will be released on BD at some point, I wait (i.e. Last of the Mohicans and Pulp Fiction). In other words, I only purchase a film on DVD if I think it will never be released on BD.

I have also double-dipped more than I expected to (Matrix, Bourne, Hellboy, Casino Royale, Batman Begins, etc.). Lord of the Rings will probably be next. I almost purchased Blade Runner again the other day, but I resisted the temptation.

I don't have any set rules - but a vast majority of the time, if a Blu-ray is available, that's the version I will get. And I'll hold off if it seems like a likely candidate for a Blu-ray release in the near future. It still annoys me that new releases from Sony like "Happy-Go-Lucky" and "Bright Star" and "Lorna's Silence" haven't been released on Blu-ray (and even though all three are among my favorite movies of recent years I still haven't bought them in hopes of an eventual Blu-ray release.)

I do still buy plenty of DVDs though - especially some of the cheap stuff from Big Lots and Walmart and some more obscure stuff that most likely won't see a Blu-ray release for quite some time (a lot of Kino's releases like the Amos Gitai boxset and Criterion releases like "Night Train to Munich" fall into this category.)

i still spend around the same amount of money a month on dvds/blu-rays but since i'm mainly buying blu-rays, i'm picking up less titles.

if a title is on blu-ray and dvd that i want, i buy the blu-ray

if a title is only available on dvd and it's a recent release, i normally hold off on the purchase.

if it's a catalog release that i can get cheap on dvd and will most likely not make it to blu anytime soon, i'll pick it up.

I'm about 99% Blu Ray, 1% DVD. The 1% being old or used DVD's I had always wanted of forgot about that I'm fairly certain won't make it to BD (like old 70's stuff) or DVD TV box set stuff that won't ever benefit from a BD transfer like Dungeons and Dragons or Miami Vice. I'm more finicky when it comes to finding good deals, but those are fairly easy these days with the coupons and whatnot.

80% of the good stuff isn't even on blu-ray, with no release dates in sight, so I'll never go all blu.

With modern fluff, I'm about 50/50 now. If I can find the blu for under $10 I'll generally get it over DVD.

I never collected as many DVDs as some here, I have a few hundred titles (lots of them TV box sets, however). Nevertheless, I find myself cutting back on purchases now that I have shifted to Blu-ray Discs. I figure that I will upgrade anything in my collection to HD if I can get the BD for $10 or less. But, in considering some upgrades I find that I haven't watched the DVDs in years. That has made me even more selective about what BDs I buy, versus when building my DVD collection over the last decade.

I also used to do a lot of "watch and sells", usually blind buys. But with the crash in used DVD prices and not very good BD resale prices to begin with, it is a lot easier—and often cheaper—to just Netflix discs that I don't think I would want to keep.

So, the switch to BD has caused me to rethink the whole business of disc collecting and to be more selective about purchases. But, for those I do buy, I am still the same penny-pinching bargain hunter I always was: The average net cost of my collection is -5¢ per title, meaning that I've made more selling BD/DVDs than I have spent in buying the ones I keep.

So far as BD versus DVD is concerned, in the last year I've purchased 28 BD titles and just 2 DVD titles, both part of a TV series not out on BD. About half of the BDs were upgrades to DVDs I already had and several of the others are up for sale. I see no point in buying DVDs anymore: most catalog titles I wanted I already have and new releases are almost always in high def nowadays.

I have almost completely given up buying DVDs (unless it's an old TV series that I figure will never see daylight on Blu) and buy movies on Blu much more selectively.

Whereas I used to average about 2 DVDs a week, I now average about 1 blu-ray a week.

But for almost a year now, I've only been buying blu-rays (lowest price I can find) - I can't even remember the last DVD I've watched, much less bought.

I'll buy new releases as Blu (if under $20), upgrade favorite movies (Love Actually, Goodfellas, etc.) and buy movies I like but don't have on dvd (if under $10-$$11 [for example, The Arrival, Short Circuit, Roxanne]). I'll still buy inexpensive dvds used or at Big Lots.

I buy even more DVD's than before. That has more to do with my taste in cinema though and finding good deals on amazing films that are only, at this point, on DVD - rather than it being anything else. I prefer Blu-ray as a format -- no question there whatsoever.

If a Blu-ray edition exists then I will never settle for the DVD. I would never even consider a purchase of the DVD at a considerable discount from the Blu-ray cost. I'd simply wait for a sale on the edition I truly want.

Even before I had a player, if a movie I wanted was available on Blu-Ray, I would not buy it on regular DVD. I've been annoyed a number of times since a few older movies I bought on standard DVD are now on Blu-Ray. This has made me hold off on buying some catalog titles, but then I worry if I don't buy those, the studios will think there's no market for those movies on any format, so you just can't win.

I don't get rid of stuff, but I don't replace everything in the newest format either. Since I just got a new TV, my rule is that I have to watch whatever copy I already have on that before buying it again on Blu-Ray. That way I can decide if the old copy looks good enough.

Most of the time Blu does look noticably better, but I found an exception last week- Screwballs, a low-budget movie. The Blu-Ray looks the same as a good film print of it would look, but it was the first time the picture wasn't screaming "Hi-Def!" and I'm betting the standard DVD doesn't look that much different.

Not only has my buying habits changed but my collecting habits have changed as well. My rental habit has increased, I no longer burn anything, and I have no interest in owning anything I won't watch repeatedly. I am trying to shed many titles and have reduced my collection by several hundred over the last couple years. Now anytime i see something that I don't care for I toss it or give it away where I used to keep it "just in case". I just never knew what that case may be.

Quality over quantity and rent everything else.

I buy virtually everything on BD now....
The only time I still buy anything on DVD is for TV shows I am still collecting and finishing up the series with that are older, only produced in standard definition, and will never see the light of day on BD....and even those shows are now pretty few and far between, as I only have one season left of Beverly Hills 90210, two seasons of Melrose Place, and three seasons of Party Of Five left to go (though I sadly may never finish POF as it is currently stuck in release limbo hell by Sony apparently due to poor sales).....oh yeah, and seasons 13-19 of The Simpsons still to go too...

A lot of factors really. Netflix has been a massive game-changer, along with the fact that our DVD collection just sort of naturally plateaued. In the past year we've started just tearing through stuff, like all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, various anime series, etc.

I still get every MST3K box that comes out, I recently introduced my wife to the Eccleston/Tennant Doctor Who shows, which she loved, so we've also been picking up a few of the older series too. But I've also been selling stuff that's been sitting on my shelf that was watched once, and I've had no inclination to watch again (Sleepaway Camp box, Contact).

Also, for Blu-Ray, I've been mainly keeping my eyes open for true upgrades, such as films that never got a 16x9 release on DVD (or any DVD release).

My spending habits changed around the time I started getting into HD DVD back in '07, but really ramped up once I dove into blu in early '09. But it wasn't just because of that.

I found myself having less time to watch my DVDs in '07, so my backlog of unwatched discs started to pile up. When I made the move to HD DVD, it lead me down the path to getting an HDTV and an HD DVR from the cable company. This lead to me watching more TV, which again, took more time away from watching DVDs. I bought a PS3 to watch Blu-ray, and I end up using it far more for gaming.

Because of all this, my unwatched pile is huge. Back in '07, I'd buy most of the big new releases every week. Now I only tend to buy when the deals are really good, and not likely to be better in a few months. I think that's what has really changed over the years is how fast DVD and now Blu-rays drop in price. It used to be if you didn't buy it release week you'd have to wait at least 6 months for a better deal. But now we're seeing the price dropping within weeks on many titles. I will not buy FOX TV DVDs when they come out because they always drop within 3 months.

And yes, I still buy DVD. As a wrestling fan, there isn't much of a choice. And all the stuff from before 2008 is never going to look any better on Blu anyway (unless WWE can release unblurred stuff from '98-'02 at some point, but that's another story). I also have TV Shows that fall in that category. I even buy some movies, but this year I've only bought 7 on DVD (and only 1 is even out on Blu).

I usually try to find the Blu-ray edition of the movie (now that I have a Sony BDP-S370 player), but since I also occasionally collect anime I have still have no choice but to get the DVD edition (since Blu-ray anime discs are still pretty rare--mind you, this may change since many anime series since the mid 2000's have gone HD).

Indeed. I wouldn't spend $0.03 on a DVD if a quality Blu-ray of the movie exists (or is sure to in the future), regardless of the asking price of the Blu-ray.

I was tempted once. The latest DVD of Chinatown (a movie on my personal top 20 list) is a substantial upgrade over my older disc and I could've snagged it for $4. However, all that opportunity did was firm up my policy- I won't buy it again 'til it's on Blu-ray.

Speaking of which... come on, Paramount! Get it out- I want to buy it!
