Anyone else have problems with Disney and /or Pixar blu-rays?

A few months back, when I bought A Bug's Life on BR, the disc always froze right before the credits. I chalked it up to being a fluke...as it hadn't happened with any other discs....until now.

Just watched Princess and the Frog on BR for the first time, and the disc froze right before the credits.

Not sure if I should have the player checked out, or call Disney.

Anyone have similar problems?

Could you list the make and model of your player and when was the last time you updated the firmware?

Nothing wrong with a Samsung. I have three of them and have zero issues.

I have a Curtis Mathes 130, Memorex 2510, and PS3 - all haven't had any problems with any Disney BD's. My Memorex seems to be really slow in loading the menu's for Ponyo, but that aside nothing's gone awry.

You may want to look up your player over on AVS Forum.

I also have a Samsung (1500 I believe, I am at work at this time) and I have never had a problem with any Blu-ray, that being Disney or any other.

Samsung has been so good, I may buy one for my wife and I's room. She is frustrated when I buy BRs and she cannot watch them upstairs.

All I know is.. my PS3 hasn't messed up yet. So I'm damn fine. Seriously though...it may the discs or the player itself. Have you played the discs on any other player?

Re: Anyone else have problems with Disney blu-rays?

I tried playing this in my PS3 over the weekend and I have to say it had the LONGEST loading screen in history. It took almost 20 minutes for the firefly creature screen to finally process and get to the menu. But since now it only takes about 3minutes, which is considerably longer than any other blu-ray I've ever played in it.

Samsungs had a bad reputation because their first BluRay players were crap, but I understand that they're good now.

Re: Anyone else have problems with Disney blu-rays?

I have a Samsung BD-P1590. My original one decided after just a few days of ownership that it would only play DVDs, but its replacement has given us nary a problem with Blu-ray Discs. Quite the opposite, in fact; it gets cranky about playing DVDs. Maybe my player's a snob. As for the titles in the OP's query, I cannot respond as, alas, neither title has found its way into our fledgling library. (Easily my most high-falutin' sentence all year!)

That's usually due to the PS3 trying to connect to and load from BD-Live. Disconnect your player from the internet and the disc should load much quicker right off the bat.

Re: Anyone else have problems with Disney blu-rays?

mulderxcoltrane - I have exactly the same blu-ray player and I had the exact same issue with Princess & the Frog. Tonight I updated the firmware to version 2.07 (mine was at 2.05) via USB and it solved the problem! 2.07 was released on the 20th of March so you probably updated a week too soon! Anyhow, I hope it works for you too.

Re: Anyone else have problems with Disney blu-rays?

I have never had a single problem with my samsung 1500 or 1600, I had one incident with live free and die hard on the 1400 i used to own,but it was resolved less than a week latter.

dont let people who jump all over samsung make you question your purchase, there are just as many people very happy with their 1500 and 1600 bluray players from samsung as there are people who claim to have issues. the same could be said for people who have had issues with their ps3 or there sony players or various other machines.

Re: Anyone else have problems with Disney blu-rays?

I have two Samsung players and they work great. Especially when interfaced with a Samsung LED. There were some firmware releases that jacked up playback and even loading certain discs but lately I have had no issues with any bd's on the latest firmwares for my 1500 and 1590.

Biggest issue with Disney blu is there arent enough of em out yet... especially the remaining pixar titles.

My friend had the Samsung 1200 model and started having problems with some titles not working. He upgraded to the 1600 model and the few titles he had problems with worked. Until he brought Mutant Chronicles on Blu-ray. Even after upgrading to the last to current firmwares it still does not play on his 1600.

I spoke too soon in this thread. We watched The Princess and the Frog last night and had the same problem with it freezing with one note left of the song that was playing before the end credits began to roll.

Dude, at least we are 8 for 10 right now when it comes to the Pixar titles...and chances are we will be 10 of 11 by the end of this year (as long as Nemo is released alongside TS3 this fall).....

Now, the traditional animated classics is where the real serious drought currently is...we've only received a mere 4 so far out of more than 40 possible, and one of those was just a new day and date release (Princess And The Frog) while the other three were all Platinum/Diamond titles....we could have been up to a big 5 by now if Dumbo had actually got a US release...the only other confirmed scheduled title is currently BATB for October (another Diamond release), with maybe the Fantasias by years end (more Diamonds), but yet Disney keeps re-releasing titles on DVD only (Alice In Wonderland, Great Mouse Detective, Black Cauldron) when they should be putting out a BD as well....I understand that their 14 biggest titles will be the ones slowly parceled out as Diamond titles, but why can't they at least give us some of the "lesser" films in between?

I could be entirely off the mark here, but my guess is that, due to the nature of the vault titles in question, it's difficult for Disney to create Blu-ray transfers of a lot of their hand drawn animated features. I understand that animation doesn't necessarily lend itself to a significant improvement in HD (or at least, that's what Shout! Factory said when they explained their hesitation about a Blu-ray release of The Transformers: The Movie).

Then there's the cost issue. If Disney is really having to bait a lot of consumers to go Blu by issuing only BD/DVD combo packs and flooding the market with coupons for A-list titles like Snow White and recent Pixar releases, then it may be that their bean counters just don't expect it's worth the cost to develop a Blu-ray version of The Great Mouse Detective, etc.
