Studio Ghibli's first catalog title on blu is 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'

'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'

from a little blurb off of blu-ray.com:

At a recent award ceremony, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's 1984 animated movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind will be released on Blu-ray in Japan this summer. No further release details were given. It is expected that a US release will take place later in the year.

Time to start hoping for a Master Audio Japanese track. Would've liked to have seen Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke receive the treatment first, but any Miyazaki is a-ok with me.

You can almost guarantee any Asian release from Disney won't have a lossless original language track (damnit). I'll be happy if has an excellent HD transfer and a good 640k DD5.1 track.

so knowing disney as of late, there will be a flyer for this in Ponyo with a release date given, then as that release date gets close, No one will have this availble for pre order and disney will suddenly get quiet about a us release, meanwhile every other region in the world will see it released on its planned date lol.

This is one I haven't gotten around to on DVD for no good reason. Good to know my inadvertent patience is paying off.

Disappointing that they didn't release several blu-ray titles along with Ponyo like the titles they are promoting with the DVD release, but I will take whatever they will give us. I still keep around a HD copy of Howl's Moving Castle on my DVR from StarzHD.

but remember 'Nausicaa' is only a mono sound dvd - lossless in both Japanese and the English dub should be essential on both the Japanese AND US bluray - I'm hoping if and when the bluray gets announced from Disney maybe this go around they could pony up the time and expense to include a subtitled commentary track - which is on the Japanese 2DVD special edition but not on the US DVD edition.

I'm going to hold off until Disney announces some spec's... I have a feeling this release could go three ways: lacklusters bare-bones, porting the current feature over, or an elaborate upgrade... only the later will get me to purchase this because we all know it will never go below $20...

Obviously you've never had the 'Disney announces title x' and a few weeks later 'Disney delays title x'. Please see: Rounders, Dumbo, Monsters Inc, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown....

I was referring to his "... because we all know it will never go below $20" comment.

Ahh, I was responding to his response of
Time to start debating whether or not to sell my DVD.
With Disney, I don't sell till it's in my hands.

re: Studio Ghibli's first catalog title on blu is 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'

AsianBlurayGuide mentions this:

During an award ceremony for the Japanese Blu-ray Disc release of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo, Walt Disney Home Entertainment made a very exciting announcement. As expected after the success of Ponyo on Blu-ray Disc, the studio announced to begin Blu-ray Disc releases of Studio Ghibli's classics (probably in Japan) in 2010! Specific titles haven't been mentioned, but based on some comments from Toshio Suzuki during his radio show, The Ghibli Blog assumes that My Neighbors The Yamadas (ホーホケキョとなりの山田くん) will be the second Blu-ray Disc from the studio.

Well, the Ghibli blog is incorrect because Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa has already been officially confirmed as the next release.

If you don't want to pay $80 for the Nausicaa import from Japan, Optimum will be releasing it in the UK in October. Unfortunately, that means it'll almost certainly be locked to region B, but for those of us with multiregion capability, this is very, very, very happy news.

Wasn't the conventional wisdom that Disney would offer a US release soon as well? I know the have a spotty track record, but it may not hurt to wait a couple of months and see whether they announce anything first.

re: Studio Ghibli's first catalog title on blu is 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'

http://www.asianblurayguide.com/news...in_march_2011/

US fans of Studio Ghibli rejoice! Walter Disney HE announced to finally bring Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to North America on Blu-ray Disc on March 8, 2011.

The 1984 masterpiece is already available on Blu-ray Disc in Japan, UK and Australia. While latter ones are locked to Region B (confirmed for the UK disc, but I bet Madman will use the same for their Australian release), the amazing Japanese release is region free but could put many fans off because of its high price. So the upcoming US Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack with the following features and temporary specs should please most region A buyers. Hopefully Disney will add a losless Japanese audio track this time...

-----

Bonus features:
Blu-ray Disc
* The World of Ghibli? Visit Nausicaa's world in this enchanted interactive experience

Saw this announcement somewhere else the other day and it made me realize I have yet to watch my DVD of this...

We have, on the other hand, watched Kiki's more times than I count...
